I know. I never have this kind of luck when a bike I want is available when I can actually afford to buy it.

Right, but I live within a few hours of Eric (Ekpent) and Nick (Tews19) and between them no good CB750 or CB550 goes unpurchased. It is pure luck that the seller of this bike didn't return Nick's call.

Good point about Eric but Nick is a non-player lately! [he bought a house]

Finally home. Licensed and insured, but won't get to ride for another few days. This weekend's project is to get the new head assembled and installed on the Yamaha Vino 125 scooter I picked up last summer so I can flip it.

Man the blue on this bike looks so great in the full sunlight.

Thanks, I'm really pleased.

The gauges look like crap, fortunately I have another set I can swap in while I rebuild these. Not sure what I am going to do about this giant ugly oil pressure setup.

I am bringing a spare stock seat home with me tonight to replace the stepped seat and also a front fender, although I am not sure if it will fit over the 110/90 front tire. If not I will replace the tire.

Looks good, Danny.  I've always loved the 550F in blue.

BTW - I put the Mbars on mine and did not have an issue with the stock cables being too long.

Once I get the bars next week I will be able to check, but based on the drag bar that is on it now the brake line is 2-3 inches too long. The PO had the bars that came of it and I think they were higher than stock.

It's hard too see in this picture, but there is a significant S in the line

Fortunately my custom brake hose thread provided me with lots of options.

Installed a front fender last night and took it for a ride. This weekend is definitely a 'replace the fork seals' weekend. Not much damping there.

Exhaust sounds great, very Mach 5 with a nice burble and pop when you close the throttle.

Whomever installed the exhaust and pods apparently knew what they were doing, the fueling seems spot on, no bogging or idle problems.

I brought one of my spare seats home Sunday night and was going to install it to replace the stepped seat (my long legs need more room), but the seat, which is I think from a '78 550k doesn't look like it will work. The hinge bracket connection point is different. I may end up having to buy a whole new seat, which is annoying.

The clutch pull is very stiff, much more than I recall from my '77 K. The lever has been replaced with a dog leg style, which I don't care for. Fortunately I have a stock lever in my stash of parts. I suppose is could be stiff from sitting for so long, but I also wonder if maybe someone installed stiffer springs. If it stays this hard I can swap in springs from one of my other engines.

Topped off the tank and checked the oil. Oil level was fine and the oil was super clean, I am thinking the PO had changed the oil after he bought it, or the PPO had done so before putting it away.

Finally, even though the tires appear to be in good shape, they do seem rather hard. The date code on them indicates they are 6 years old, which isn't bad, but I am still leaning towards replacing them. Now I just need to decide how much money I want to spend. If I drop $200+ on a seat than may mean another set of Shinko 712's rather than the Conti Classic Attack radials I really wanted.

My M bars should arrive this week along with the Lucas Style tail light I ordered to replace the tiny and not very visible LED tail light/turn signal combo thing the PO installed. The long weekend should give me time to get a lot of things done as I get it ready to ride up to Rockerbox in a couple weeks.

Nice score Danny! I miss my little F'er! I bought mine blue like yours and went out Bright Orange.

If you're looking for a seat cover I had good luck with these guys:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-CB550F-CB550-F-1975-1976-1977-HEAT-PRESSED-BLACK-SEAT-COVER-HSPPA-/171452416724?hash=item27eb5c42d4:g:sVUAAOSw7NNUDewY&vxp=mtr

I thought the quality was pretty close to OEM.

Lube the clutch cable to see if that frees it up. Otherwise it might need replacing...the stock Honda cables seem to have less resistance than the aftermarket MotionPro stuff is my experience.

The Shinkos seem to be popular...not sure the longevity on them... but, trading tire life for tire grip is something I am willing to do, as my life or yours is worth more than tire life in my book.

Some of the LED bulbs are very narrow viewing angle and they can be low output.  The SMD (surface mount device) LEDs can be blindingly bright with wide viewing angles (brightness has good visibilty at off center angles (from sides) so they are great replacement solutions.  You can get them in std bulb socket setups with different number of LEDs.  The high output LEDs run hotter than the old style LEDs so, keep this in mind for those that will be on all the time like a brake light that they aren't cranking out too much heat to distort the plastic of the tail lamp lense.

Sounds like you are making good progress on the bike.

Thanks Duanob, i am really happy. If I can't get the seat I have to work then I may opt for a cover w/foam to replace the one on the seat now. I think the pan on that seat is basically stock, so it should work.

RAF, I am going to stop by my sister's tonight and grab my can of cable lube and the lubing attachment and try that.

My '78 K seat definitely won't work as is. I have a spare with some splits in the cover, so I am going to see if I can adapt it then just buy a new cover. Adapt-improvise-overcome

Seats are cosmetic - tires are safety equipment.  My 0.02 is spend the $ on the tires you want and save up for the seat as phase two.

Great find, btw.

There is no safety issue (IMO) with using inexpensive bias plies like the Shinko 711/712 and Kenda 657's, both of which I have used in the past.

I have just really wanted to try the Classic Attacks, which have gotten uniformly great reviews. But they run $160-$170 each, roughly 3-3.5x what the Shinko/Kendas typically sell for, so I can get a pair of them for much less than a single Classic Attack.

A nice seat is a must in my book.

Danny - I put IRC's on my 550F...highly recommended for a budget minded bike where a vintage thread pattern is desired. Made in Japan.

Bt45 s are probably only $50 more a pair and are a great tire...shinkos I feel are unsafe for anyone who rides in temperatures below 60 f....yes, I tried them, never again.  I have seen your cornering in adverse weather conditions...dont try it with shinkos.
