Vinegar gas tank treatment
« on: May 23, 2016, 06:57:42 PM »
How long do you keep the vinegar in the tank before you clean it out and slosh the MMO?

Thanks

Until the old fuel varnish and rust is gone????  And this could take a while.   I use boiling CLR bathroom cleanser rather than vinegar and I finish it off with a POR 15 kit urethane liner.  In the finest tradition of Louisiana redneck technology, I duct taped my Aermacchi tank to the jacked up rear wheel of my grandson's four wheeler and tumbled it with nuts, bolts and washers inside.  It made a LOT of noise and I had to put a window box fan on the quad's motor to keep it cool but it did speed up the removal of a lot of rust.

Seriously, I have seen some of my worst tanks take a week of tumbling and using fresh reheated cleansers to get it clean.

It took my tank a couple days. I used mmo after cleaning another tank but it didn't work as well for me, I think you may need to keep shaking it around more because I still got some flash rust. I used two stroke oil and gas the next few times and it worked better for me.

Took about 2 days for my tank to turn spotless.

Something that I still didn't wrap my head around was just how fast the flash rust forms.  You have to be very very quick in washing out the vinegar (plenty of water) and then filling the tank with gas (if you aren't going to line it) or whatever your choice in liner is.

very quick.
power dry it out as fast as you can.I used my Electrolux vacuum cleaner(pre-warmed up)hose on the outlet side which blows high volume after rinsing the tank 3 times w/ warm water and draining as much out of it as i could get.
I put some MMO inside it then and shook it all around to coat the whole tank;the flash rust is tough to beat..

De-ox C from Bilt-Hamber dissolves rust totally  but does not affect steel or other materials. It works very quickly but you can leave it in as long as you want with no damage.

Thanks,

The Calcium, Lime, Rust (CLR) bathroom cleanser works great boiling and thinned 50 percent with water. Just don't boil it in the house. It stinks and your wife will be really upset with me.

Prep-n-etch from Home Desperot works good too. Then use fogging oil when you're done rinsing it out. Just another opinion but it worked for me.
