Are 500, 550, 750 tanks the same? Anybody know if one would fit my 400?

500/550/750 tanks are definitely not the same.  Depending on the year, 500 and 550 tanks are the same.  An early model (pre-'77) 750 tank will fit a 500/550 frame if you narrow the front tank mounting rubbers/pins.  Need to consider petcock side as it changed over time in the 750's.  The early 750 tank apparantly matches up with an earlier 500/550 seat - the later model 550's (including the 75-77 550F) have a longer tank/shorter seat.

I have no idea if any of the above tanks would fit the 400.  Any clue as to why you need to know???  Just curious.

Keep looking at Mr chrometank's picture. Sorta like the shape and the chrome look. Something different- thought I'd like to play with the idea as the Royal Enfield alloy tank won't fit right up. For the price of a one-off alloy tank I could buy another motorcycle. I'm addicted to stupid projects that cost me too much money. Would really like a Velocette but I don't even like to work on bikes (which is why I don't go out and get an Enfield)- love the Brit look/Japanese reliability. I'm old and jaded because I've seen it all many times (well...only one Marusho. No Broughs or Megolas yet). Finally sold my stinky Morris Traveler with too many upgrades and just restored a '53 Steib S500 and did I mention how I HATE mechanical work but for God's sake I can't help myself!!!!!
Thanks man. That helped. You're really good at this. Wish I could shake your hand.

I think the cb350f four tank will fit the cb400 (don't know if the seat will work) but if you are goign to chrome it the shape is more brit bike than the 400 and will probably look more like sculpted aluminum. There is a chrome paint by the alsa corp that will allow you to paint a fibreglass tail section if you want that to match the tank.

What kind of options do I have on a 78 750? Im looking to buy a 78 within the next few days and I dont really like the "huge" looking tank it has. Will an earlier year model tank fit that is not as big?

Its gonna be a Cafe project but I dont want one of those whale looking tanks either. Is there a parts interchange book or site for the 750?
