CB500/550 Keihin carb rebuild guide - 627B, 022A, 087A
« on: May 25, 2016, 08:24:32 PM »
I stumbled across this recently, not sure if it's already here on the forums somewhere, but if not, I thought it might be of use to some folks.
It's a rebuild/disassembly guide for the Keihin 087A carbs - but I believe the info & steps would also be relevant to the 627B's and 022A's - if that's not so, please correct me.

It has good photos and seems to be a pretty decent guide, that could also be used alongside the Honda manuals. Resident carb guru harisuluv gets a no doubt much deserved mention!

I've attached the file or it can be found here: http://blacksquaremotorcycle.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/HOW-TO-REBUILD-KEIHIN-CARBTORS.pdf

Whilst on the topic, there's another good guide here: http://www.motorcycleclassics.com/mc-how-to/honda-cb500-carburetor-rebuild.aspx

Ofcourse I can't judge the necessity of your labour from here, so forgive me I give a warning in general: after having used a similar set of carbs for over 135.000 kms and 36 years I still cannot think of one reason why I would undertake all this. For maintenance and/or cleaning removing the floatchambers is enough. All relevant parts can be serviced from there as I've described more than once. I do not recommend to separate the carbs from each other. Minute (black) parts are easily lost in the process and I doubt you'll ever find replacements.

Not every carb rack has been continuously used for 36 years Delta. The ones that have sat for 36 years will be the ones that require complete disassembly to clean and inspect every part. Maybe for you cleaning the float chambers is enough, but not for the racks that have been sitting.

Nice find Bootsey, it'll help a few people. Maybe get this added to the rest of the files on here somehow.

Ever heard of a barn find? You're definitely in the minority of people that bought bikes brand new and kept them and maintained them for 35+ years. Every bike I've ever bought used needed a carb rebuild.

That's why I have choosen my words as I did and if my warning does not apply to you... good. But... I wouldn't like people that are new to carbs to think this is the 'when you do it, do it good' approach, because in most cases it is outright overkill and it can have unnecessary frustation as a consequence..

I'll agree with you Delta, I'm all for not making more work for yourself when it's not necessary, which is why I decided not to strip my carbs to this degree - but obviously that isn't always the case in every situation. This post wasn't made to convince anyone that they should do so, but merely to share some information that might help fill in some of the gaps in the shop manuals should that work need be done.
