Kokusun ignition
« on: July 03, 2025, 04:27:16 PM »
I am playing with a Kokusun electronic ignition but dont have any instructions for it and cant seem to find any on the web.
Do you set 1-4 at the F mark and turn the plate until the light comes on?

See the instructions for the V1.
I think this is the same as yours, Kokusun, a Dyna copy.
4into1 used to sell them.

And then check for total advance with a timing light.

The directions for this unit say;

17. Do NOT attempt to set your timing using a dynamic timing light. It will damage the triggers if the ignition plate is loose/loosened while the bike is running. This will cause a ground failure that will short the capacitors inside the triggers. A dynamic timing light may be used to check advance only. If adjustment is necessary, turn power off before making any adjustments or loosening the screws that  hold the ignition plate on.

so I dont know about using a strobe..

I believe those instructions mean that it's ok to check the timing/advance with a strobe as long as the unit is fully connected and secured.
But if any adjustments to the timing are necessary the unit must be totally powered down before moving the plate.
I have seen the same instructions with other electronic ignitions.

See how the top adjustment slot has connectivity all around it and the other 2 slots don't?  That must be where the unit grounds.  I have noticed in the past when adjusting points that any time that screw is loose, it's easy for the plate to lose it's ground.  Best keep that contact point clean, if that is all it takes to kill that ignition.
If it works good, it looks good...

Maybe, just for safety, have a jumper to ground near the top screw on the board.

The Kokusan is the same as the Accent ELZ2 ignition which has been around for decades as designed by Uwe Gottwald, member of the German forum. Instructions in English are here: http://www.transistorzuendung.de/ELZ2CoilGB.html
Note that Accent advises you to communicate what coils you have: standard or low Ohms. This matters for sending the right rotor; low Ohm coils need a limited dwell compared to standard coils to avoid overheating.

Makes sense. Check with the light and then shut down if you want o adjust the plate. Make sure it’s all tight before checking again (maintaining the ground). Might take a few try’s, but worth at least checking once to see how close you got it?
