Well that's deeper than before :))

You might just have very dull bits. Keep at it, or get new bits. It actually doesn't look like you've hit the pump body, so that's a plus ;)

Does any one know where to find the part number for the screws I'm drilling?

No worries, WHEN I get them out >:( I'll measure them. Thanks for offering. Those sound like sizes I will most likley be able to find at the hardware store. I thought it might be the dreaded 6X32 type

I'm assuming the oil pumps are the same across the models - I just swapped to stainless allen heads on my 75 CB550K. From memory the 3 countersunk screws for the oil pump outer cover were M6 x 20mm & the screws that mount the pump to the case were M6 x 35mm. Good luck!

I checked my 650 pump and it doesn't use countersunk screws. Weird because I think it's actually the same body as the 550 pump.

The 650 pump is significantly larger, I seem to remember nearly 20%. The outer cover is steel so holes are not countersunk.

Well there you go, haha. It does use a bunch of the same o-rings and springs and such so I'm not that insane. ;)

I think the 650 starter is larger, too.

Is this correct?
The first time I assembled the kickstart shaft I didn't put the plate guide in that little space in the case so it does not move. I did it this time and am thinking why else would that be in the case if not for that. I think I'm right this time?

In my pictures that toothed drum sits away from the copper colored gear. Is the spring (#19) in place properly?

Maybe not, I'll have to check in the morning. I didn't know there was a correct placement for it.

Dave's on the money, the gears should not mesh at rest, they should only becometh one when the kicker is put through it's rotation.

The manual and partsfish shows the order of assembly. There's always a correct placement.

Well hang on, I used CMSNL to get the correct order. What I was saying is maybe one of the spring needs to be adjusted in the way it sits.

How do I assemble the kickstart to prevent the gears from meshing?

I personally can't help other than point you to the parts diagram which shows the proper order of assembly. Maybe someone knows of a video or a better exploded view. I'm pretty sure the Clymer has a good one.

Any clue what this pin is? I don't see it on the parts schematic. I was pulling my primary shaft again because I forgot to install the cam chain. It came from the bottom case. It is not one of the shift pins or alignment dowels which both go in the top case. Wouldn't come from the crank would it? There is a bore it fits into on the outside of the crank cases around where the crankshaft goes. I'll take a photo if needed.

Maybe it's #24 that would make sense because I was pulling on the shaft these parts are attached to.

It has the sizes of the pins/rollers right in the description. Measure it and see where it's supposed to go. I was initially thinking it's the roller/lock in the starter clutch assembly (20). There are three of them there and are kind of loosely put in place and they can fall out with a light jostle.

The pin is 1/4 in or so. I'm not sure which schematic you see #20 3 times. http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb550k-1978-usa_model7222/partslist/

It can't be #24 on the primary shaft, what I originally thought it was. All those pieces are way to tightly hidden for it to pop out.

I noticed a funny hole outside of the crankcase right underneath the crankshaft. The pin happens to fit very well in there. What confusing is it does not show it on any schematic. What could this mystery hole be??

Gotcha that's what I looked at and that thing is solid. Looks like nothing could fall out and looks like those pins were in there.

Well I'm ready to torque the cases together. I still have to put in the crank seals, set rings and clean the surfaces. Someone please let me know if they see something missing.
