'79 CB650 Air Box Hoses??
« on: May 29, 2016, 09:59:11 AM »
So I was wrapping up changing out my regulator/rectifier yesterday and when I went to hook the battery back up, I noticed a loose rubber hose poking out just in front of the battery.  It seems to be connected to a little square box at the bottom of the air box assembly.

With that said, I have some questions.  Should this hose be connected to anything, and if so, where?  What is that little square underneath the airbox?  There's another larger hose nipple on that square bit that doesn't have a hose on it.  ...should it?

I tried to take as best pictures as possible, given the awkward position of everything.

Thanks in advance for the help!

It is part of a condensation drain system. There is normally a hose going down from the bottom to drain, and one going up, to a T that connects to the air box and to the air manifold that feeds the carbs.

Wow, I didn't see this reply until just now.  Thanks for that diagram!

After a fair bit of snooping around with a flashlight, it seems to me that there might be a decent difference between the 1979 and 1980 air box, is that correct?

I noticed a single downward-facing nipple coming out of the air box just behind carb #1.  My hunch is that my dangly hose that's poking out next to the battery should be re-routed and connected to this.  As far as I could tell, there aren't any more places for hoses to connect to, nor is there a 'T' junction as on the 1980 model.

Definitely feel free to tell me I'm wrong in all this, and everything is routed wrong on my bike.  Considering what I've gone through already with PO's handiwork, I wouldn't be surprised.  To whatever means, I just want answers and no dangly hoses lest they be there by design.

(here's a picture of the nipple on the air box behind carb #1)

I'm not very familiar with the '79 model, having never seen one in person. I just realized that I accidentally linked an '80 model diagram instead of the '79.  :-[
Now looking at the correct diagram, http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb650-1979-z-usa_model472/partslist/F++17.html#results

I believe that you are correct in your assessment of where it connects to. It looks like instead of the 'T' both hoses connect to the box instead, one to that nipple, and the other to the airbox, but from your picture, it looks like, you only have one of the hoses.
