Battery maybe
« on: August 03, 2016, 05:46:22 PM »
Ok guys I'm stuck. I just put new rings and valve seals in my 750. I have velocity stacks (let the hating begin) and an open exhaust. Main jet 120, slow 42, needle 2nd from the top. Bike started with no problems and ran before the new rings and seals but was fouling plugs and burning oil, thus necessitating the service recently performed. Any ways long story short the bike has been hard to start since the rebuild and when I would get it started it bogs and dies in gear. Now I found a wire had come loose from one of the coils so I blame the bog on that. Long story short I fixed that and still am having trouble starting it. My battery however took a beating with trying to start it. So I resorted to the kick start. My question is will the bike start with the kick start even with a weak battery?

Maybe, depending on how weak the battery is.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

If you mean you are ramming 11 amps down the battery's throat with a big battery charger, shut the charger off RIGHT NOW!

What's the current adjustment of your air screws? And how old is the gasoline you're using?

I think he means 11v at the battery before plugging in a battery charger.  ;)

If your plugs were fouled, then your bike will struggle to start again. Pull the plugs, clean them fully or replace them. The 120 mains might be a tad too large so if you ran the bike in the upper throttle range, that could be contributing to the fouling. Best to start with an idle plug chop. Get that right, then tune from there.

Haha yes I do mean volts not amps ::). Anyways gas is new and mixture screws are 1.5 out. Plugs were fouling before the rebuild. I tore the thing apart and there was a puddle of oil on top of piston 4. Plugs 2 and 3 were almost on the lean side with 120 mains. Once again I am running velocity stacks and an open exhaust. Hard to determine what the plugs are doing now considering I can't get it started and when I did have it started it would bog and die when I put it into gear. I have yet to ride it since replacing the rings and valve seals. It definitely needed valve seals and maybe rings. I had blue smoke and was burning a quart of oil every 50 miles and plugs 1 and 4 were always oil fouled. As for how it's running now I'm kinda clueless. I figured the bog was an indication of being too lean but as I stated I found a coil pack wire unplugged. Is this all making sense lol?

Oh wait you mentioned an " idle" plug chop?? How would I do that? Shouldn't I be worried about overheating??

Yes, you need to use a fan blowing air over the motor. Start the bike, let it idle for 3-4 minutes (with a fan) and then hit the kill switch. Extract plugs. That will help you adjust the idle circuit tuning.

One caveat, you do need to have your carbs vacuum synched for this, and if you can't get it to idle or stay running at 2,000 RPMs to synch, you need to remedy that first.

Thank you. I will try that. I have the carbs benched synced right now. It kept quiting on me when I tried to vacuum sync it. I have about a 1/8" gap under the slides right now for the bench sync. Is this too much or too little?
