Pulled out of the "barn"

Hi all.
I'm Al and we just brought home a '76 cb 550 with under 9000 miles on it.
Needs a few thing - reason to sign on to this forum. Been here 10 mins and learned 5 things.
So, thanks in advance for all that we need to learn.
There are a few things that seem different then other bikes but the truth will prevail.

Nice.Too bad it doesn't have the original pipes, but it looks to be in great shape. Those gauges look like they aren't faded at all. I hope your plan is to just shine and ride.

Well, a new tire - owner said " Never changed that one."
New set of 4 into 1 pipes
Plugs, air, oil....
And it feels like the fork seals are going
Oh and on it first quick ride after we pulled it off the truck FRONT BRAKES!!!!

Back story:
The 1st owner bought new and rode around. Then in '91 got married.
parked it in the living room and took it out once or twice a year when the wife was not home and "it had time to cool".
Sold it to me yesterday.
Found tinsel on the back wheel. Go fig.

Cool, the subtext to my comment was please don't take that clean mostly original bike and cafe it.

In addition to the fork seals I would also replace the fuel lines. Honda uses 5.5mm hose. You can typically find it on eBay and sometimes at older dealers. Replace both tires and the tubes. You don't need to spend tons on tires to get good ones. You can get perfectly adequate ones for around $100/pair from a variety of sources or you can opt to spend 3x that much on something like the Conti Classic Attack radials.

Oil and tire threads are legion here, there is an active 550 tire thread farther down the page.

Original owner bikes are sure getting hard to find nowadays as those owners age. Bought this one I think last year or the year before from the original owners family. The son let a friend of his try to drive it in a parking lot and of course tipped it over, needs a couple things but luckily the tank and  side covers were spared. Made the price cheaper for me.  ;)

 David Silver Spares sells a replacement master cylinder that is cheap and works great.With braided hoses and EBC pads, you'll have just about the best brakes you can get on these bikes. Add some EBC shoes to the rear.

 You'll keep hearing "3,000 mile tune up". Do it. It does make a difference. And carb sync REALLY matters with these bikes.
 I love the 550's and you have a nice one.

Thanks for the info. I will look for any threads for the fork replacement. Never messed with them before.

Fork seals are not that hard to do.

My recommendation is that you take some time to read through the posts at Motorcycle Classics about the light restoration they did on a CB500 a few years back. The majority of it applies to early 550's as well. They cover fork seals, carb refresh, and installation of tapered bearings. I saved copies on my computer for easy reference with my first 550 in 2011.

Boys and Girls
May I introduce our new little girl.
We went through almost everything and made sure that she was safe and was running well.
The only change from stock is the 4 into 1 exhaust. Old ones were long gone.
New tires, battery, chain, reworked the forks, tune up and adjusted everything.
Rides like on rails. The shifting and revs are fun.
It's a blast to ride.

I also have an extra luggage rack that is currently on my 72 CB500.  Not sure if it will fit a 550 but I'm willing to sell it if you are interested. I have pictures.

While we are on the rack topic - I have one also that at sometime I'm going to install.
It looks like it is one that will fit.

Question is: It only has the number "1005" stamped into one side up right. Is this a Honda part? and Is it for the CB 550, 500 family?
I saw one that was for a 750 but it was much larger
