1975 F0
« on: May 31, 2016, 11:56:18 PM »
i know i don't post very much on this great website, thought i'd share my youngest son Sam and i made a quick (1900 mile) road trip over the weekend to pick up this F0, this is his first motorcycle and he wanted a father son project, so here we go.  after careful initial exam, this 5k mile bike has sat since 1980 after a minor accident.  the headlight and blinkers are still askew, i am certain the bike was parked after the accident and never ridden again.  not a single screw, nut or bolt head appears to have had a screw driver, wrench or pliers on them, including the screws under the points cover.  front tire factory original Bridgestone.  rear tire a factory correct period replacement Bridgestone.  Honda logo battery.  has the inspectors green daub of paint on master link, chain less than half worn.  the Sunflake Orange paint literally looks nos.  the down side, the tank sat with hardly any gas in it for 36 years, so i have a total of 10 pin holes to contend with.  considering either POR-15 or Caswell sealer.  i've not ever used either product for a situation with pin holes.  Can anyone share their experience ?  here's a pic as it appears.  we will do a sympathetic preservation, the boy intends to make it his main ride.  he is VERY VERY happy !

i would really appreciate hearing your experience treating pinholes with either or both Caswell's or POR-15.

I've used pot several times with great success.  I bought a 76f that the PO used Caswell on. That didn't work came out in pieces. I'm sure he didn't prep right but that's my experience. Goog luck and be safe. BTW. I have a couple 75f parts bikes if you need to replace anything. Tim

Congrats, looks like a nice F model.

I've used Caswell on a few tanks, highly recommended. Buy it on ebay...

Wow Steve, GREAT score. It's a shame about the tank though. Those 10 holes will multiply when you acid etch the interior in all likelihood.

As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

I'd give the POR15 a try. The thickness of the urethane can permanently close up lots of small holes. And using some of the backing cloth on the larger holes can also fix things up nicely. Just buy the silver gray POR15 and not the black. The silver urethane makes it easier to see inside the tank afterwards.

I'm in the process of doing my seventh POR15 tank as I write this - my 72 CB500. And none of these were quick fixes because you need to let the chemistry, some agitation with nuts and bolts and possibly some heat work all of the old rust and varnish out. Then get every drop of water out before applying the urethane because it does not stick to water.

Or . . . buy another tank???

I would try to save/preserve the original tank with either POR or Caswell. I've had good experience with Caswell (on 3 tanks).  I have not used POR, but I have had crappy results with Redkote.  Caswell will dry clear.

Congratulations on your Project. I finally got my dad into motorcycles recently and we're doing a frame up on a CB350 twin that he picked up from a buddy of mine. It's an awesome thing to have a father/ son project.... You're in the right place for any advice. the guys here are the best at helping everyone out. I have NEVER had a bad experience with anyone on this forum.

The members here have taught me more in the past couple years that I could have ever hoped to learn in my lifetime. I have a couple CB750's so If there's anything that I can help with, Please never hesitate to ask. Best of luck on your project. Take care.

Steve,

You should think about moving your thread to the Project Builds Board -- http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/board,103.0.html
It's great for an ongoing diary of your build and you can post multiple questions as they come up.

You can use the MOVE link below to do it.

Likewise, but what does this have to do with his tank!

My worst experience is with removing somebody's badly applied RedKote from my Macchi tank. That took a ton of work!!

thanks for all your great feedback.  i truly appreciate it.  the condition of this tank is a genuine case of testing the capabilities of a sealant.  i have used sealants in the past, but have deliberately quit using them when the tank's inner surface cannot be saved.  having pinholes, this tank is the worst i have encountered.  back in the day, i used kreem.  imho, junk compared to the newer products.  i have used caswell's on a couple of occasions, i find it very sensitive to narrow range of temperature in order for it to flow at an ideal working viscosity.  i have used POR-15 on a number of occasions, but again never on this many pinholes and i do very much want to save this tank, as the original paint really is like nos.  as far as removing gross rust, heavy rust, i like "wood bleach" or oxalic acid.  it gives results so much better than the 3% phosphoric acid sol'n.  i have used electrolysis in the past and it works really well, but is time consuming.  as far as removing old tarry or dried gasoline i have discovered the generic type of zip strip paint remover makes SHORT work of old gas, so i remove the gas first, then remove the rust.  since i have a POR kit, i've decided to go with that.  after a night of oxalic acid, the inside of tank was beautiful white raw steel and 2 more pinholes revealed themselves.  i have not ever used the mesh POR supplys with their kit, so this will be a new venture.  will keep all posted.  going to try to get my on to join so he can post.  and try to figure out how to get this thread over to member builds.

Have you ever used RedKote? it sets-up fairly thick on the bottom especially but I think you have a good product w/ that POR.

Steve, I think that your are going down the right track. I have restored two bikes. One had a very rusty tank and I used POR15 to line it after de-rusting. This was done about eight years ago and I have not had any trouble. However, I am not a fan of tank liners because there is always the chance that a little bit of rust has been left behind and if this happens what do you do. I have contacted POR15 and they say that their product cannot be re-coated. So it is not just a matter of removing the rust and re-coating. In your case, where you have pin holes in the bottom and nice original paint that you want to keep, removing the rust and sealing with POR15 is a good option in my view. Pat

Thanks, Mark !  Mark had a big hand in helping me get the bike, i won it off ebay for $1368 end of April, it was just a few miles from Mark, so he picked it up for me til my son and i could make the 2000 mile, 54 hour trip to pick it up.  hopefully my son will do some posting here in time, he knows he has alot to learn about the bike, that's why he wanted a father son project.
