Honda CB750 F2 ?? or what?
« on: May 30, 2005, 02:30:34 PM »
I layed my hands on a CB750 this weekend, the papers say it is a F2.
But the side caps say a 750 k , the tank looks to me also a K, black forks.....

Does anybody know what it really is? A scrap build machine?

The frame number say's CB750G-1008xxx

Europe?  The CB750G- is a non-US F2 frame, I believe.

What is your engine number?

The bike is probably a conglomeration of parts from various years which isn't really all that unusual.

It is a CB750Four K, as the sidecovers say. Pipes are not original, that bike had 4 pipes as the very first CB750's. IT's the bike that is pictured in the cover of the CB750 Haynes shop manual.

It also has the comstar rim and disk brake setup on the rear, not the drum from a K

I looked in my Honda Motorcycle Identification guide 1959-1988, published my the American Honda Motor Co.

There is no listing for a Honda with a frame number beginning with CB750G.

Because of the G in the frame number, I suspect, as Glenn suggested, that this bike was not made for the US/north american market.  I have both a 77 and a 78 CB750F.  When I look at the picture, there are parts that appear to be from the F model such as:
Front forks and wheel, Front brakes, rear brake and rear sets (Rear wheel too small for an F or K of the 77-78 vintage).  F model engines were black for the F2.
The exhaust system is not likely from Honda.
Carbs look like 77-78 F or K models.
However, the tank, side covers, seat, grab bar, rear fender, front master cylinder,  and tail light, do NOT look like or have the styling found on my CB750Fs.  Some of these pieces may be K style.  But, I don't have examples of those to compare to.

If it weren't for the G on the frame, I'd say it was a conglomeration bike assembled from various pieces.  But, the G is significant, I think.  Normal American K models won't have this, and F models would say F in that postion of the frame number.
I wonder what the engine numbers are?

that definatly looks likes an f bike that someone put K bodywork on. Not uncommon as I have several paint sets and seats for my bikes. Probably assembled from a multitude of bikes. The frame would have to be an f because there are brackets specific to the frame for the rear disc that the k bike won't have.

CB750G is a UK model 750F2 we never got the F3 as the US did. There has to be something funny going on because last year i worked on a CB750G bitsa here in UK that had been imported from the US--Makes me wonder if Honda "Diverted" a batch as the 750 sold better in US. As to the K motor not unusual as the F2 was the most fragile of the 750's and had a lot of valve trouble at about 20-30,000 which is normally out of warantee
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).
