CB750 tank badges

My 1971 K1 has black tank badges and they should be white. I'm thinking of painting them but can anyone tell me how they're fixed to the tank and how to remove/replace them? I don't want to start levering them off without knowing how they're held on - could lead to problems!!

hi pete, they were originally held on with two little clips and just pressed into these , try some fishing line behind the badge and ease off gently,  ;)    mick.

Hang on to those badges when you take them off, the K0's were black and seem to get big bucks for them.

Do you reckon I'd be better off selling them and buying new white ones? I think they're likley to be genuine ones because when I bought the bike it had a other parts on from the first CB750 such as the plastic lensed speedo and rev counter. Interesting you mention the K0, they're very rare - according to John Wyatt in his Original Honda CB750 book(which seem to about the best) -  only 121 were made. 36 came to the UK, none to US and god knows where the rest went...

Me, I'd keep the black ones in my "treasure chest" of parts even if I put white ones on. I have one black one, NOS and it's staying with me. I hope you still have the plastic lensed tach and speedo, a good set went for about $800 on e-bay not long ago. I bought a 1969 in August of '69 but I can't remember if it was a sandcast which are the real rare ones. Once Honda figured out the had an absolute winner on their hands they went to die cast. I just bought a die cast motor that appears to be built in late '69 early '70.
Check your engine and frame numbers for build dates, you may have a 1970. And, keep all the original stuff, you'll drive the guys that know what you have nuts. Check the build date on the steering head, that will tell the story. Also, another good book is Honda CB750 by Mark Haycock.
Sorry for the rambling answer - it's saturday nite and a bit of red wine has been had - but I think you may have a real interesting bike there.

Hi Pete I would check that it not a wrinkle tank first if it and has the original badges it may be worth big $$

The black tank badges are worth big bucks. I wouldn't paint them.
