1974 750 K-4 Freedom Green rebuild
« on: April 26, 2016, 04:28:08 PM »
Pulled this from an antique shop in VA. Not sure where Im headed other than stock with maybe an 836 if its needed. Bike has sat along time. Its cosmetically very nice. No cut wires. Had a windjammer at one time. Was told it was a race bike by the shop. Dont believe that at all. There also was a pair of 1981 cb 400s also in this pile. Weirdly enough was 20 years of Snap on tool salesman of the year ... and such plaques from early 90s to 2K+.  Carbs are dirty but not stuck. Gas tank had light surface rust(I already dealt with it). Seat perfect. Pipes cut off with some sort of jaws of life tool I think.
The bad.  The engine has been somewhat taken apart. It seems that everything is there. Or rings washers and some rubber pieces aside. It is missing an oiljet orifice that i can tell. Im tempted to re ring it clean it seal it up and go.
Ihave zero engine exp. Have a service manual and Hondamans book gut I can barely read a ruler so thats against me. Any way ill post some pics from my phone next of what I have to start with.
Lucky for me the last person to take it apart cared I think.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

Checked oil pan. Shifts good. New rolling breadrack engine stand!
Talked to a machinist (the only one within an hours drive) he's familiar with my project. I'll post more plans after some window shopping on the web.
I don't know why that duct tape is there? I'm not taking it off yet! Nothing wrong under it but is it marking something?

836 it is. Have the cruzin image kit on the way. Gasket kit and oil seal kit? Not sure I needed the oil kit but since Im in this might as well. Machine shop owner has been in buisness over 30 years. Hes done this before. I asked about porting and he thought a good polishing job would be the way. We will see of course when I deliver the lumps to him.
Just trying to build a running engine without much later tuning. If this goes well Ill be forever doomed into searching for more power.
My next problem is the cam!
I should pop a better one in but grinding the cam tower? or valve cover for clearance is not for me this first time!
What are some cam options for me? Cycle-x has 3 too choose from. Not getting the 1399$ yoshi one on e-bay!
This bike will appear stock when done so just jetting and possibly a 4>1 only because my wife hasnt seen my 4x4s in the box ;D
Thanks for a cam idea. the cycle-x ones seem what I need. If someone has one for sale im here.

Any thoughts on reusing the 74 stock cam? Not looking for crazy power. I need to replace 2 engine studs. One long one short. Seems to be lots of advice for/against the cx-1 cam. Read some Back in the day 836 it with stock cam.

Slowly putting screws back together finding what's missing. Before it goes to machinist. Found missing oil jet! Work on mix and match the rockers and bolts next! Missing starter gear washer and oil guide? It goes around an outside cylinder stud.
