If I test the leads of the charger while plugged in and charging they say 13.8V but the battery will not go above 12.3V no matter how long it stays on.  Charger has the green light indicating it's full.  I can't get a reading above 12.31V.  That indicates a partially discharged (bad) battery right?

Can you get a hold of a 1 amp constant-rate charger ?

Do you mean with the charger plugged in the voltage at the leads is 13.8V, but measured across the battery terminals you only read 12.31V?

I'll measure the voltage when my Bettery Tender® (old one, not "plus") on my 400F traditional wet cell Yuasa YB12A-A battery gets to "storage".
I'm curious about the float voltage it reaches but I don't understand how the voltage on your charger leads can be higher than the battery voltage: the on-bike leads should connect (through the fuse) directly to the battery, and if you use the clips rather than the permanent connection cable those clip directly to the battery.

As far as batteries go I go with Yuasa Yumicron® wet cells. They outlast no-name or supplier branded batteries by a good margin in my experience, need only occasional (monthly) attention from the tender during winter storage and a top up with distilled water once - maybe twice - a year to keep electrolyte level between the lines.

That seems pretty good to me.

I have no desire to spend over $100.00 on a lithium battery that also needs a special reg/rect (another $100.00) and can be quickly destroyed by over discharging or charging. The Yuasa costs around $45.00 and mine have usually lasted 5 years.
Yes, wet cells will also be damaged by deep discharging but retain a decent percentage of their performance afterwards. Overcharging just reduces water in the electrolyte to hydrogen and oxygen, "boiling" down the fluid level - easily seen and fixed with a bit of water although it means a problem with the charging system that must be resolved. Lithium batteries can lose most of their capacity when abused even once. AGM batteries may be great, but I don't mind doing battery checks and maintenance and I install the drain tube properly so any drips fall on the ground and not on any bike parts the acid can damage.
The lithium weight saving is hardly significant: as many have said, a diet will help more. And many of the lithium evangelists I meet have installed way oversize tires that add more (and, worse, unsprung) weight than they saved in the battery - what was the point?

^+1. Couldn't agree more. There's nothing against the common Yuasa battery. It's cheap, can handle voltage variations and - most important - is a direct fit, meaning the right size terminals exactly where you need them. Connecting it wrong is impossible. No extra costs.

Exactly correct.  charger seems to be putting out more than enough, but off the charger I get 12.3V

I hear you guys on the old school lead acid thing but I'd just prefer to spend a few extra on a no maintenance situation.  I just wanted to see if there is something I'm missing as far as full charge only showing 12.3V goes...  I have NO interest in a tiny Lithium to hide somewhere, nor any interest in buying oversized tires that don't really belong either.  My bike is mostly stock with some suspension enhancements from Ikon and some Lazertecs at the correct sizes.

Copy/pasted from Motobatt's website about chargers:
AGM likes to be charged at a slightly higher voltage than flooded types. Motobatt AGM should be charged at up to 14.9V to achieve full charge to the plates. Many older brands which are widely sold, fail to reach voltages of 13.9V, thus the battery never becomes fully charged.

Why then would the leads when attached read 13.8V.  It seems like the charger is willing to fully recharge but the battery only reads 12.3 when pulled from the charger and the charger says it's completely charged.

Edit: I'm looking at CB750 batteries.

I was just comparing the motobatt below with the scorpion below.
Both have a 1 year warranty.
Both offer free shipping (to my zip code).
But the scorpion has 210CCA vs motobatt's 160CCA.

Scorpion $74.95 shipped.
Motobatt $88.14 and they won't quote shipping, there is an error on the page...

Focussing on CCA is... well mwah. If your bike doesn't start within 7 seconds of cranking, something is wrong and needs to be adressed first. In other words: extra CCA is not going to help you.

But thinking about it from a battery longevity standpoint, well that's a different ballgame. When a battery begins the end of it's useful life, one of the first signs that will be noticed (even by non-technical people) is cold cranking current availability.
With all other things being equal, 27% more CCA will win my purchase. It's not about starting my bike or yours, for me it's about reliability.

Edit: I wish some of the earlier posters from 2016 would weigh in on that.

Last time I replaced my battery I had the choice: the old 12N12A-4A-1 and a newer type, YB12A-A, CCA resp. 120 and 150. The newer type has thinner plates to achieve some extra CCA, but the question remains: which type will offer a better longevity?

I dunno if I'm right or not, or if CCA really makes any difference toward battery life. But I sure am enjoying my k8 project and spending more time here on the forums. I'm really glad members like you are still here pointing the way and helping me keep perspective.

I put new Motobatts on my 400 and 750 in 2012. The 400 is in use daily all year and so never needs to go on a charger, the 750 is only used from time to time during winter, and I try to remember to put it on an optimate to charge it occasionally.  The one on the 400 still works perfectly, the one on the 750 is getting a bit sketchy now. I was looking at the options the other day & to replace it I will either go for another Motobatt or one of the Yuasa AGM ones, the YTX14AHL-BS. I tend to think of Yuasa being the ultimate brand generally.

AGM only way to go.

Scorpion battery from Battery Stuff.

Hey OT7, what's your experience been?

I had a Scorpion AGM in my CM400C and lent it to a friend who left it in his bike over winter, I got 2 solid seasons out of it before that, but I'll never know how mine would have lasted.

OK, re an earlier post from me:
I put the battery tender on my 400F (Yuasa battery new last spring) until it had a solid "storage" light on for a few hours.
Battery voltage with tender still connected was 13.38 VDC.
Disconnected the charger and voltage stayed at 13.3x for about 15 minutes. Got bored watching that - voltage would drop .01 volts in about 3 minutes - and turned the bike on (kill switch on STOP) and let it discharge to 12 VDC in about 15 seconds with lighting load. Switched off and watched voltage slowly rise and then got bored with that, it took three minutes to go from 12.65 to 12.66V so I doubt it will end up much over 12.7 VDC with no load.

Rolled out my 550F the other day to take it on a ride, it has been a few months since started.  The Scorpion battery was dead, no surprise there, but I used my Noco jumper and got it started in 2-3 min after several 5 second cranking attempts [no surprise there either].  After a proper warm up, took it for a ride and it ran great, was a fun ride!  Stopped for gas and the battery did not have enough power to turn over the warm engine, but kicked over first try.  Put the bike away and put my Yuasa charger on it to give a proper charge.

Went to check it today, the battery shows 13.8V but wont even turn the motor over. WTF?!  Dont recall how old the Scorpion battery is but I'd guess at least 3 yrs, so really not that disappointed.

Shopping for batteries brought me back to this thread and typically, I would just order another Scorpion but ran across the Mighty Max on Amazon for $45...

 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MVGK3S9/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A33N703ELCFX8U&psc=1

The Scorpion is $68...

https://www.batterystuff.com/powersports-batteries/sYT12C.html

$28 is not a whole lotta money these days but for an additional $6.99, an "Allstate 4-Year Auto Accessory Protection Plan" can be purchased through Amazon.

I did this for by CB750 a couple months ago and am thinking I may go this route.

Any of you guys have the Mighty Max?
