First time builder near Detroit, 1976 CB550K2
« on: June 10, 2016, 10:14:41 AM »
Hi everyone,
I have lurked here for a while, afraid of posting as this is my first build and I also know many of you may hate me for the angle grinder to the frame. Anyways, I grew up riding circles around my house on an old Yamaha Razz, until the blow-by caused a white circle and killed the grass. Mom put a stop to that quickly. I have ridden a few dirtbikes, the biggest being a 250. I have always been fascinated by anything on two wheels. I finally moved into a place with a garage, and got a local job after commuting out of state for many years. I decided I was ready for a project. I grew up frequenting garages, as my father was a mechanic, eventually teaching automotive at a couple colleges. I have plenty of experience because of this, but only on automobiles.

Knowing that I wanted a complete build, and that I planned on hacking the bike to pieces, I wanted to avoid a clean bike. I found a bike that had been sitting for many years in a run down house in Detroit. I paid $150 for it, and had to drag it into the trailer, as everything seemed seized. I also found the largest spider I have ever seen (not at a zoo) that was hiding in the airbox. The thing scared me half to death when it ran out of the bike, past my feet, and into the corner of the garage. I relocated it, as the thing was just too long-lived to squish.

Anyways, I live in Ferndale, MI, so if anyone is close, feel free to lend a helping hand, and I will be sure to keep cold beers in the fridge.
Feel free to check the progress of the build http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,158382.0.html

Thanks to everyone for all of the helpful information!

Cheers,
Marc

Very nice beginning.  You'd be surprised how much of that rim rust comes off with some vigorous scrubbing using a wet, soapy SOS steel wool pad.

You are much further along than I am with my 72 CB500 rebuild. I just got the tank derusted / relined and the carb assembly removed.

If I go too fast, I will want to "project" again too soon. Gotta' drag these things out for me and enjoy the journey.

And I will see your spider and raise you a rats nest with rat urine all inside my 73 Honda ST90.  That bike smelled horrible until the frame came back from the bead blaster.

I will have to try the steel wool pad today. Also, keep your rats. Spiders, although scary, are easily relocated or crushed. This project will likely take another year or two, dependent on the time I get to spend in the garage without the girlfriend or dog.

Use plain steel wool,  not Sos.. I think Sos means Scratch our Stuff..
Good luck with the project.

The wet soap in the SOS pad acts as a cleaner and lubricant so it will scratch less.

I use plain steel wool as a facial scrub. Thanks, and feel free to come help anytime. :)

Once I finish welding the frame, I will give this a shot. I can at least try on an inconspicuous area at first.
