Out of retirement.  Frank Giannini brought his vintage racer out of deep storage to roam the race circuit again.  I don't have all the details on it, but my understanding is that the bike has it's share of correct 970 parts.

He brought in Mark Heckles to ride her.  A pro rider and son of Keith Heckles, lap record holder for the 1976 Manx Grand Prix.  As far as I know, this was it's first time on the track in many years.  Mark came from 4th at the first turn(out of a 5 bike Formula 750 field), to take 2nd convincingly but couldn't catch the Yamaha out front who got away.
Not bad for a shake down run with a rider who has never ridden one of these bikes before.

It had a wonderful sound...

This is never a good thing on two wheels, and especially not on a race track. Alas...all's well that ends well, it's only for points.  :P More later.

Really good race reports from all, with great pics too.
The DMS lads were at the Welsh Philip Island this weekend gone, for the latest round of the CRMC championships. Being a circuit on an island, off the West coast of Wales, it naturally lashed it down with rain; to the point where Saturdays races had to be abandoned and the racing restarted on Sunday.
Alan managed a clean sweep of top steps on the 350 over three races, but not without being run close by Richard Molner in all three. The winning margin never exceeded 1 second. That said, a win is a win, is a win...no matter the margin. So the 350, and Alan, have kept up their winning ways from Billown.
The 500 had a less uniform pattern to its finishing positions, managing a 4th, 6th and 3rd. The results seem to have been tempered by some difficulties in gear selection over the meeting, which is a shame. A bit more work for the lads to do prior to The Manx. There appears no particular issue with outright speed, so that is very promising.

I have attached a few photos, relieved from Sports-pics site, but left on the credits in place :-)

Thank you for the advice/info on the CB500R too. As soon as I have some photos of the frame I will start a new thread.

No excuses but after a season off I'm struggling getting back to a pace I'm happy with, although the bike is very strong. We did manage full points in my P2 class (won both the heat & the final) In my bump up I managed a 3rd in the heat and had a strangle hold on 2nd in the final but a flat front tire put an end to my race on the second last lap...crap. Managed to keep it upright though and that's a bonus. Tim Voyer is back to fine form & his bike is as strong as I've ever heard it so that's a good deal.

This was a wierd track layout, mostly a drag race between corners, no bloody flow to it so was a bit of a workout. It offers reasonable grip but my tires were absolutely pooched by the last race. Not sure yet what caused the flat yet but it pissed me off & I should have pulled off sooner, just frustrating. I blew a tire on our trailer plus two bicycle tires to boot.....enough already!

Here are some static shots, and I'll try to add some action photos as they appear.

Here's that trick BMW I spoke of last time.

This big ole Honda was supposedly an original American Honda race bike. It's a beast and loud.

The SOHC group was well represented at Mid-Ohio.  Scotty MacKenzie took a 2nd on Saturday and a 1st on Sunday on 70's GP 500.  Ryan Hunt took the win on Sunday.  My weekend came to an end in the first corner of the first lap of the first race.

Struggled with grip all weekend on the medium compound Avon.  My plan was to take it easy until the tires warmed up, but when the green flag dropped I charged into turn one way too hot and high sided.  Will be out of action while the bumps, bruises, and 2 broken ribs heal.  Hoping to have the bike rebuilt and the body healed by Barber in October.  PO'ed with myself.  Once I realized I had the wrong tires I knew the risk of a fall was high.  As the saying goes, too soon old, too late smart.

Wow sorry to hear Martin. Those damn ribs will keep you from horizontal for the next while. Be good to yourself. Get rid of those medium compound tires when you're better. We'll meet next year at Mosport!

Ryan fractured his C7 vertebrae in a sidecar crash Saturday. He spent a couple nights in the hospital but is now home & he will be fine. Cervical collar for several weeks.

Sorry to hear about Ryan.  Wondered why he did not show in the Sunday results.  Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Glad to see you rode out the flat tire.  Best of luck this season.

Hi Brent,

I recently changed my Avon for a pair of Conti, HIGHLY recommended switch! The grip and feel is way better!!! Everyone is using them in my class now, and they are HALF the price of the avon

Which model Conti? The Avons are near $450 per set and that's a tough pill to swallow.

Yes TG has used the Conti's. He did say he wasn't happy with them in the rain, have you found this?

The problem is here we cannot use radial tires in Period 2. I may suggest a rule change concerning this.

these one: http://www.continental-tires.com/motorcycle/tires/motorcycle-tires/classic-classic-racing/contiroadattack2cr

I haven't used them on the rain, but some guys in my class prefer them in the rain over Avon as well. For rainy days most racers put on a pair of Heidenau, not Avon...

Also, with conti I'm using a 100/18 front tyre, instead of the 110/18 from Avon, that also improved handling. At the rear I'm using a 130, some guys use a 150 but I'm not so sure about increasing the size of the rear tyre...

I always thought the AM22/23 combination were the cat's ass, and in the dry I have faith. I'm thinking now they are not the best rain tires. I've never used the Conti's and I'll bet they would be a great dry track tire. Some discussion makes me wonder about those in the rain too. On a wet track I watched a couple riders run away from me on Heidenau's.

What about Dunlop race tires in the wet, any experiences anyone?

I loved the AM20 90/90 front on my 500/4 even more.... shame they stopped making it
dont know what rims widths riccardo put his contis on, but the 110 front needs a really wide rim to work.... like 3".. sounds odd but ended up running in the gpz810 3" rims front and back (130 tire). wasnt just me, seen quite a few 3" front rims in conti shod endurance racers. by this logic the 100 conti front would need a 2.5".

The recommended rim widt for the conti 100 is 2.15, and I'm using exaclty that one, at the rear I'm using a 3.5 rim. To be honest with the avon I had much truble with the rear tyre, that was slipping quite a lot!

One of the competitors in my race at Mid-Ohio reported seeing smoke coming off my CB550 at the start of the race.  Here is the reason.

The plug sealing the starter hole had fallen out.  It is an aluminum plug with an o-ring.  When I built the motor I had second thoughts about not mechanically fastening it in place.  It stayed in for the first two years.  Maybe the extra RPMs I am running has increased the crankcase pressure, the breather is restricted, or the o-ring just wore out.

The entire left side of the bike from the engine back has a mist of oil on it.  Explains the big slide on the warm up lap and the sudden high side in the first corner.  Should have listened to that little voice that was telling me the plug needed mechanically secured.  Would have save a lot of pain and expense.  Just thankful I did not oil the track and cause anyone else to fall.

gee. rocket, go stand in the corner for a long while.... if there are second thoughts it means it should get fixed with positive blocking...this could have ended in bigger tears and not just for you. good thing you safety wired the sprocket bolts though :)

Had a mechanic pull the same stunt on me after a rebuild on a 500/4, putting oil down l/h side of the bike & rear wheel - blissfully unaware whilst circulating at the old layout Mallory circuit (RIP) as it was pretty much all r/h bends until you hit the adverse camber, occluded apex, no run-off, armco lined left hand Devils Elbow! - thats when I discovered that adrenaline is brown and smelly  :-[

Round 4 - combined round with Oregon at the PIR track. It's a fast 1.9 mile track with 9 turns running clockwise. Not my favorite track, but the camping is nice with good spectating options. Their big bike vintage scene died off a few years ago so they changed vintage superbike to anything air cooled. That opens it up to some big horsepower bikes that can be competitive in the modern classes too. They do have a thriving smaller bike scene so the rest of our vintage club got more races than usual. Unfortunately we only get one race for the weekend.

Race - My pit mate Chris got the hole shot from 4th position, but John made quick work of getting around him. I was relegated to 4th because I can't buy a decent start!! I got around Chris on lap 3. I had John in sight most of the race, but he was pulling away a bit on every lap. We really got separated when the cripple triples lapped us around lap 7 or 8. They made some really sketchy passes on us doing 20-30 mph more than us. The slight chatter I have that I'm normally able to ride through turned into jack hammer chatter near the end. Chris had the same issue. We both have the stock CB front end while John has a GL1000 front with custom triple tree and he wasn't experiencing chatter. Guess what I'm probably doing over the winter.

Haybus, Ill be machining up some custom offset triples for my GL1000 front end going onto my AHRMA racer soon as well. Maybe we can get together and get you a set or two for you and your buddy. Thinking of either a modified from stock fixed offset or going with an adjustable version, similar to the vintage Spondon parts.

Alan, what were the conditions when the chattering occurred?
