For a variety of reasons I haven't been an active member for a number of years (4 or 5). I had to register as a new member as I forgot my name and password. I used to be #555 when I joined around 1998. I'm amazed that I can't find any of the older members; every one I looked at in the list has been a member since 05 and none earlier. Anyhow, I still have the same '73 CB750 that was giving me fits-the carbs then. I think I'll be looking and asking for tech advise on tuning the carbs mostly as I don't want them to get the best of me even if it's been almost 10 years. See you around the forum!  Olkid

Hey Olkid, welcome back.  I believe that the the 2005 dates for members is the result of the switch from the old Greenspun boards to this PHP board -- their member dates didn't get carried over to the new forum.  I'll bet you'll see some names that you recognizes soon enough. :)

Here is one old member, #158. I guess like most I sticked to the list for much to long. When I registered on the forum I became a 'new' member again.

Don't give up the list. I guess most of the guys who ride and maintain these bike for over 10 jears are still there.

The SOHC/4 Owners Club member number has no relation to the forum number.  The forum number is a sequential numeric id that gets issued when you create an account here.  The Owners Club number is a tradition that goes back to the founding of the group, long before there was even a mailing list, much less the forums and website.  Once you're issued a member number, you always have that number.  You used to be able to look up your member number, but, for privacy's sake, I've removed those pages from the website.

If you are reading this and do not have an SOHC/4 Owners Club Member number, get yours today at:

I like the old list, but haven't seen anything posted on it for a long time.  'Course, the last time I posted anything on it was last February, so I can't complain.

I guess the old list does not get any new members any more and the old blokes allready know everything there is to know on these bikes :)

If I have a real problem I post on the list.

Yeah, I'm glad to be back. I almost sold my 750 two summers ago but couldn't bring myself to do it. i knew I'd never be able to find another bike as cool as it, or be able to afford one if I did. The guy that was interested thought $750 was too much and then his interest faded about the same time my brain fired up again. I can't remember the vintage bike mag that has the value charts but they say my bike is worth between $2100 to $2500...but to me...it's PRICELESS. So, I'm back and those carbs are going to work right or I'll die trying.    Olkid  #555

Ok, so I've been away for a couple of years myself.  Family, children, career, new bike, all kept me from spending a whole lot of time working on my old CB550.

Well, now I'm back, and the CB is my only bike again.

I've been working recently on cleaning the carbs, trying to get the cafe seat and clip-ons all bolted up and getting her back on the road.  I still need to hook up a taillight (fabricate some sort of bracket), front turn signals, shorter front brake hose, stabilize the seat mounting, straighten out the unsteady idle, clean everything up, new tires, etc. etc.

Can anybody tell me how to determine my old member number?  I'm pretty sure I was around 224 or 228 or something back in the day.  How does one go about finding this number and having it linked to his new membership?

Thank you,

Edward

Thanks ProTeal.  I got to see your 750 in another thread.  She sure is a beauty!  Keep up the good work!  I find your interesting work inspirational as I finally gain momentum on my cafe project.  In fact, I'm seeing so many new cafe rides on the forums that I'm really excited.  It seems like the level of custom work I'm seeing on our old CBs has really hit a new high.

Take care,

Edward

Hi Lloyd!

I remember you!  You always had the most accurate technical advice.  Still got that beautiful yellow 550 with the silver frame?

Er, thanks!?    But, the bike you're thinking about is/was Rob Lloyd's bike.  Mine are all stock things mostly, very ugly in the view of the cafe crowd.

I used to get a lot of Rob's Email to forward on.  I could never convince him to change his name... ;D

Oh boy, don't I feel dumb!  Sorry if I've confused you two!  On the lighter side, I've probably been confusing you two since about 1995 or so?

I'll try to keep my eyes opened about that from now on.  Is Rob Lloyd on the forums these days, too?

Well, I rode the b@st@rd tonight!  Got home from work, and had a burst of energy.  Wired up the taillights, bolted on the cafe seat, checked the throttle cables that seemed a little sticky in 5 degree weather, mounted the gas tank, started her up, flew down the driveway, and up the hill, to the top!  Then she stalled out.

Sat there for a minute, trying desperately to start her up, as this is a pretty busy intersection.  She started up, but was bogging, good enough to get to the next block so I could get back down the hill.

Nearly brained myself rubbing up on the curb, but managed to save it.  Engine kept stalling however.  Finally died.  Let it roll down about 1/4 mile while trying to bump start -- no good.  Finally noted rear tire slipping while bump-starting.  Looked down and saw liquid all over my rear tire, and left pant leg, dripping down bike.

DUH!  Forgot to attach the fuel hose to the carbs!  Stopped again, rushed to turn off petcock, squeezed hose onto pipe.  Turned on petcock again.  Still pouring fuel out.  Now also from vent tubes in carbs.

Tried to start again, just to limp another 1/2 mile home, but no good.  Carefully examined fuel leak and noted that with all my excitement, the fuel hose was stuck on VENT TUBE not the fuel inlet on carbs!  DUH!  Connected fuel hose properly, let bike dry off for 1 minute, started up easily, rode around block to house, then up hill again, this time no problems whatsoever!

OK, so I'm noticing that clip-ons are really uncomfortable.  I guess I should start looking for rear sets now.  Or maybe mount my old handlebars back on the bike to actually ride.  I love the way the bike looks with clip-ons, but I'm itching to actually ride this thing.  I guess I'm getting too old.  I got cramps in my leg leaning way over.

Anyhow, I'm totally stoked!  Haven't ridden this bike in probably close to 5 years (since my son was born).  I started a "cafe project" but never really visualized an end date, you know?

Anyway, keep the rubber side down, guys!
