In looking back over your thread, would you do me a favor? On the steering neck is your VIN plate, left side. What is the date of manufacture? It will be listed MM/YY in the upper corner of the tag.

The reason I ask is, your passenger pegs look like an earlier frame model (to me) than a '76. Maybe I'm wrong altogether. But I thought in '76-> they moved to hooped brackets for the pegs  :-\

Another item for you to service while you have the bike apart, is the pivot rod of the swing arm, and it's bushings. This needs to be greased regularly. If it was not while in service, it will wear out the bushings (at either end of the pivot tube) and cause noticeable slop in your handling. The rod that passes through also is prone to becoming stuck, so be patient extracting it.

It all needs to come out anyway for powder coating of the frame and swing arm...

Thanks! I am sure some purists are cringing, but hey, at least their bikes are more valuable with another frame all chopped to hell haha.

I actually have the bushings and believe the bearings where the shock meets the swingarm as well. I imagine I may need to take it to a press for those, but had not gotten that far yet. Regarding the VIN, I'll PM ya.

So i had been ignoring the bike as I was doing some work on my Scout to get it driving. Anyhow, when I took the wheels to get laced and have the tires installed, the rear was seized so I picked up another rear wheel. Turns out they mixed up the hubs and center sections (not sure what they are referred to as) so everytime I was testing, i could hear metal grinding and tightening the axle a little bit would result in a locked rear wheel. I looked through the box of old parts given back to me by the shop and realized that the hubs were different. The original has a smaller diameter step to one side, whereas the other hub on the bike is the same across the width. I pulled the brakes off and installed on the other part, and then polished it a bit. I realize the brake assembly is not on correctly, I just tossed it on so I wouldn't lose it. I need to finish cleaning up the other parts before installing the pedal assembly.





Parts have started arriving, including slightly longer rear shocks. I have carb rebuild kits, new cables, new(reproduction) switches, and other misc pieces, including a new kickstand spring (finally). I got a slightly longer chain (110 link) hoping that I will be able to use the longer shocks to get some clearance when my fat butt sits on the bike.


I am visiting family this weekend, so although I am very excited to make more progress, the parts will have to sit and wait.

I had limited time friday, and after realizing I ordered the wrong shocks (eye to eye instead of eye to clevis) i devided to return them and get something better. I emailed Hagon with what I am looking for so hopefully i will get a response soon. I also realized the reproduction switch for the left side required me to run wires through the handlebar. Yea, i know, obvious first-timer here. I drilled a hole, smoothed it out, and ran the wires. I think I will eventually polish the switches.

The Ikon is a very well-made product and priced well below the premium/custom brands (Race Tech, Works, Fox).  If you are building the bike for street use, you cannot go wrong with the Ikons.  They are rebuildable too.

Thank you both for the suggestion! I will look into those. I was looking for something an inch longer than stock, to give me more clearance with the hoop.

The Ikon is built slightly longer than stock as I recall.  This will give you some added clearance, but not that your bike will (gangster) lean over further on the kickstand, unless you lengthen it.

I am a bit hesitant to buy nice shocks as part of me worries that after all the documentaries I have watched and time I have spent so far in this build, I won't like riding on the street. I have only ridden dirt bikes on a few occasions and loved them, but I really hope I love this as much or more. It sure would be a waste if i ended up hating it haha.

The IKONS are a good compromise.  You will need some decent shocks for the god-forsaken, pot-hole ridden Detroit roads. Riding a roadbike with worn out or crappy cheap shocks is sure to provide you with a bad experience that you will not enjoy.

I had a dirt bike too [Yammie YZ125] but I found I like street riding more...

I visited early spring a few years ago.  The Enterprise clerk told me that I would be crazy not to get the road hazard warranty for a few bucks -- because they have so many cars sustain wheel damage.

Haha, good points. My International Scout feels like its coming apart every time I drive a specific block on my way into work every day. I imagine I will be looking for a more fun route with fewer lights when the bike is finished. I received a reply from Dave Quinn with some suggestions which I will be trying this evening as far as figuring out what length I need. I will spend some time looking at the options today, as I really want to get it on the road this season. Maybe that is far-fetched.

No doubt. I covet the S1000R (which you don't have to covet because it's in your garage!) but what's not to love about it!  It makes your other bikes inferior.

Truth to that. I have just spent $3,000 on "upgrading" and "refurbishing" my K having ridden the boy's bike. It identified shortcomings and overlooked things that time and a lack of comparison let slip by.
