Question about using plastigauge on crank journals...
« on: June 10, 2016, 03:30:07 PM »
Do i just measure the bearing clearance on the shells in the the lower case? will this give me the total clearance for that bearing pair?

Or do I also use plastigauge on the shells in the upper case also at the same time (top and bottom) or do the top separately from the bottom?

I hope that makes sense :o

thanks for reading

As far as I know, it is to be used on 1 surface. I put mine on the upper case (because of lowering the bottom case on to it to torque down) I've never heard of using it on each side. If I'm wrong, I'm sure there is an expert out there that will let us know

my recollection is that if you do only one side you only have info about that side. IF there is any galling or runout, you won't find it if it's on the other side.

It has been a while since I did a bottom end, but my recollection from training is that the crank has to be placed in each case half and gauged accordingly.  At best both sides are well within spec and match.

I could be wrong... I coulda just googled it... but I didn't and so am ready to be told I don't know wtf I am talking about.
I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

Like Dino does in the video, measure one side only. But obviously do it on each journal.
