How well did the Boranni true up? In the old days the rims were very good, and one could use the word "true" afterward. This new Boranni of mine is awful. I was recently told they are all now from China and "branded" in Italy. When it was as close as I could manage, it was about 30 grams heavy in one spot, so check that before you try to mount your Avon.

Mike Rieck warned me about these.......he's probably snickering right now!

Use plenty of tire lube as it's a #$%* to seat, Murphy's is the best.

If you are cutting each sleeve on one side .150” from the cylinder and 1.25” wide, you’ve got a bunch of sleeve wall material to mill down.  Lots of swearing and angry tool throwing as a result of dealing with those thin oil rings...  but I’m sure you knew that already!  😬

Brent, I acquired vintage Borrani rims for that very reason.  Yes, I have heard all that too about the new Borrani rims.  Made in China, stamped in Italy, suddenly the $100 rims are $350😏

Brent, I got to within 0.010" for runout and lateral, and am very happy with that. Both front and rear went just the same. I understand there are 2 versions of Borrani wheels. Some are rolled in China, then shipped to Italy to be checked over and roll stamped. The second version are made entirely in Italy with no Chinese work. Hard to say where things come from, but mine were shipped right from Italy and I was told that mine were Italian production.

I have not mounted tires yet, so balance has not been determined yet but the wheels themselves seem to be balanced fairly well. I just did the front tire for my brother and the Avons are pretty stiff when new (and not warmed up) but with the Ru-Glide tire lube, it actually went on with ZERO issues. The lube is water soluble and does not contain alkaline, so you don't get any of the corrosion and powder like with dish soap. The gallon I bought should last a lifetime so no more soap for me. My wheels from last year look like they came from the ocean they are so crusty underneath the bead. Never again with dish soap.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

The cast iron the sleeves are made from should machine like soft cheese so hopefully it isnt too bad. You guys have me nervous about these rims, but again, mine trued within spec fairly easily, so I do wonder if there are multiple sources of these wheels.

Good to know Mike. Maybe I will bring them in from the bottom but before the pins go in for the rods. Still thinking this one through. Do I need a ring compressor or can I safely do it by hand?

I used them all last season without issue. I built some new wheels this year with Borrani hoops and quick change hubs from a company called GPS racing. The rear wheel is over 12lbs lighter than the drum wheel from last year. I have not decided what to do with them quite yet but they treated me very well.

Such a drag, sorry to hear of continued frustration. You going to just get a new wheel from Buchanans that isnt a Borrani?

I've bought them from Motocicliveloci, they should be around 200/150 € each. Let me know if you need them, both Yossef and me know the guy quite well, and we usually get a bit of discount if we go there and pay by cash (he's 10 min away from my home in Milan). Then I can ship them to you as privateer so you should even avoid customs duty.

btw I had very good experiences also with Akront rims, they are made in Spain

Thanks Ricarrdo but no need, I dealt with Massimo and he was seems to be a good guy. The first rim he sent was wrong and he then sent this one. People probably think I can't true a rim since I'm the only guy with trouble! I should include a vid of how bad this one is.

My understanding is that Motocicliveloci was the only true Boranni supplier and everything else was Chinese but "branded" in Italy. Now I understand they may all be manufactured in China and this 3:00x18 certainly appears to be. I'm abandoning the new rear wheel & disc and will reuse the original.

Regardless, back to Sliks build, sorry for the distraction.

The bottom edge of the "magic windows" need to have a slight chamfer as well.

Magic windows beveled, still need to do some refining and smoothing there, then a few baths in hot soapy water to get all the boring gunk out of cylinders and clean the oil/feed return passages.

Before I did the windows, I mocked it up quickly just to get an idea of the awesomeness I know possess.

Brake master and reservoir fitted and ready for action. Not the cleanest install on the reservoir but it works, is well mounted and checks it off the list.

Got the rear wheel out of the basement after truing and got the brakes together so I can get a length on the brake line and it really does look tidy. I cannot believe how light this rear wheel is!!

Big work session today after work (get out at noon) and then again tomorrow, with a little break to celebrate mom on Sunday.

22 days...

Don't forget a spring clamp on that rear master. Surely don't want a brake fluid leak on your rear wheel!

Got the bike more or less mocked up Friday and through the weekend. Many parts are in their new home, some need to come off one more time for a bit more cleaning. Oil tank is DONE and looks great, fitting perfectly.

The front wheel needs some massaging as the spoke angle on the new hubs is different than on the stock Honda item, so I had some light contact between caliper and spokes. I was able to space the rotor out and mill down the caliper holder to get nearly 1/8 of clearance. I have a 1/16" and 1/8" rotor spacer being water jet cut right now and will see if I can make the 1/8" work by spacing the caliper out from the bracket as well.

Pic of the magic windows from the cylinder and case lining up.

Once the front brakes are sorted, tires can go on the front and rear. Rear is awaiting brake fittings/lines and can then be put together. I still need to come up with a brake lever stop for the up travel, since now it will just pull the brake rod out of the master and then the whole thing flops down.

I was going to make a low profile belly pan from aluminum that would sit between the frame rails and above the exhaust, but am running low on time so will make the fiberglass one from last year work for the time being. Once I am done with Gingerman and Road America in June, I will have about 4 weeks to get more things refined and prepped before New Jersey.

19 days...

cant remember which calipers you are using but grinding off the corner that touches the spokes a few mm's is no biggie, they have plenty of meat. did this often as it's always a problem with spoke wheels, never had one exploding on me...

I figured there was at least 0.175" of meat on the thinnest part of the Grimeca caliper, and would feel comfortable taking about 0.060" or so off before getting nervous.
