shop safety note.

The son of a friend was killed last night while changing tires on a mini sprint car. He may have been using  lighter fluid or ether to seat the bead and it exploded. Be careful in the shop so you can be safe on the road too.
Check your bikes, a nut, bolt, brake and chain check is an awesome idea.

I imagine those racing tire beads must be extremely tough to seat on the rim.. I'm sorry to hear about your friends son Don.

Damn.  I thought this was going to be another cautionary tale of how a cut-off wheel exploded and impaled someone.

I'm sorry to hear about your friends son. One time when coming home from work I saw my neighbors son having his car jacked up using cinder blocks as jack stands, I went straight to my garage and nabbed a pair of proper jack stands for him to use. After telling both him and his dad how bad of an idea using cinder blocks as jack stands was his dad got the idea real quick and shortly thereafter bought his own set of jack stands.

My condolences.

I've heard of people doing strange things while working on cars/bikes.

A friend of mine blew his hand wide open from fingertips to wrist while inflating a tire...his compressor thingy read 35psi but was actually 135psi and the tire exploded off the rim.

The explosion hazard sometimes becomes real for many reasons when working with tires unfortunately, and the results are never good. I was witness to an accident once where a tire installer forced a 16 inch truck tire on to a 16.5 inch rim and not
realizing his mistake. As he was inflating it, he removed the retaining nut from the tire machine. He was lucky, and lived.
I will never forget that day, and this thread reminded me of it. So many things can happen that we as humans don't think about. Very sorry to hear about your friends son Don. Be careful out there guys.

Sorry to hear that.

I used ether to seat tire beads too, once the valve shot out quite the distance.

When I was in the airforce one of the riggers was working on a clunk (cf 100) tire with the cage not set up properly and the tire let go killed him dead, dead, dead, he was a corporal and had done it before so should have known better. Right after that we got the usual films about safety.

I served a year with mechanized infantry and during that year we had at least 3 deaths - not from traffic accidents, all work/stupidity related.

The word was that russian army had 3-4% loses during military excercises.
