rear shock differences 750 vs. 550
« on: June 14, 2016, 07:04:49 AM »
I have a good set of Hagons for a 750. I know they are an inch or so longer than a 550 shock. I've seen some of the 13"
(750) shocks advertised as suitable for the 550. Just wondering if any of you 550 guys are running a 13 inch rear shock,
and are there any bad effects. Or is running a longer shock a bad idea?

No, it works great. It can actually help add a little load on the front end and help handling.

Agreed.  I am running the 750 Hagons on my 550.  No twitchiness or any other ill effects.  IMO, it improved the handling.

By increasing your rear shock length and leaving the forks the same length you're essentially decreasing your trail, so that small decrease in trail make the bike turn in a lot easier and seem like the handling has improved. A little increase in rear shock length is fine, but too much can be detrimental so just be careful.

It's a little motor and likes having the tits revved off it.

My Chinese cafe' shocks gave me 15mm lift over stock.

Definitely makes a 550 flick over easily.  Took a little getting used to.

I installed them and noticed that ride height is comparable to a 750. Rode and it seemed maybe a little improvement, but
on the highway at speed a tankslapper develops. Probably tires. Definately woke me up, was able to decellerate/ride thru it,
but hoping there are no more in my future. On the fence about taller shocks at this point. Thanks for posting with your input.
