What are my options for saving this tank??
« on: June 13, 2016, 07:19:41 PM »
I spent a couple house cleaning the inside of this tank and when i was done, i saw this pin hole on the side.

Is this salvageable? What are my options?

I'd solder it over.

+1 with a small hammer gently tap the hole to below level and then solder or braise it and file smooth.

Several options for saving the tank. The paint not so much.  :(
Is the paint a concern?

A competent brazier won't damage much of the paint in that area.

A competent painter will make it look like it was never repaired at all.

Both come at a premium.

Look inside the tank again the best you can. If its just that one little area....braze/solder. If you see more cancer don't waste your time.

Definitely line the tank with a good product after you have the hole filled if you try and save it. Has to be more thin metal in there. How rusty is it in there, a de-rust may expose more problem areas.

Yes, definitely derust the tank. If no more pin holes occur, the POR15 urethane kit could possibly cure that with just some painters tape and wax paper over the hole on the outside. I'd probably let a thicker layer cure there or possibly buy two small cans of the urethane for a double layer.

Let's talk a lot more here if you chose the POR15 route for this repair.  Details,  details, details!!!

Thanks for the help everyone. I may possibly try and coat the inside if i can inspect it thoroughly to ensure its not completely gone.

The pictures of the tank posted don't do it justice. Its almost perfect looking and then the inside is was rusted. I will put it on the shelf as a garage ornament before i strip the tank.
