Waxhaw, N.C., my new CB550F
« on: June 14, 2016, 11:52:41 AM »
After a bit of searching, last night I brought home a mostly-original '75 CB550F with 18k miles.  She's in great shape in need of very little on the outside.  I'll personalize slightly towards the sporting and reliability side but nothing major; thinking CB400 handlebar, some carb jet tuning to match the UNI filters that the P.O. installed, maybe a stock exhaust if I can find a decent one that I can afford, possibly dual discs (because it's cool that it'll use OE parts and seems to have been set-up for it originally), maybe eventually some suspension tuning, if I decide if it needs it after logging some miles first.  But first I need to diagnose an engine knock and bleed the brakes.  I'll post a youtube video of the knock and ask for your opinions.  I've been reading a lot on this site already and very much appreciate all that I'll be learning from the members here.
Here's a couple pictures, still in the back of the truck.

Saw that on CL. I think CalJ saw it in person recently, too.

Very often, an engine "knock" is out of sync carbs. I have vacuum gauges if you can get it over to Rock Hill. Do the 3K mile tune up first.

The motor does need a carb Synch. Did when I saw them and Thomas was unaware of the tool. Also, I think the axle caps might be backward on that bike. But overall, you got a great deal on a great bike, from a real gentleman!!!

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S.
