Sabre seat cowl to 550 solo mod
« on: June 17, 2016, 09:17:57 PM »
Picked up a v65 sabre rear seat cowl at the salvage yard today.

I liked the look of it.  Figure I'd try to craft my own solo seat for bloo.  $20 is a good starting price to a custom seat!  I'm working with nickel and dime funding in whats turning out to be a diy punk project bike.

Initial asessment.

Overall width is adequate for the stock frame, relaxed profile of the sabre cowl spreads out as it goes forward, but easily bends in to line up with the tank.,

Just setting the cowl on looks good, except the helmet holder hits, and the factory seat hinge seems in the way.
Need to cut the tabs off the sabre cowl and rely on steel sheeting to fasten it down.  I imagine the lines will look better once the obstructions are cleared.

Want to put a hinge door in the angled section to carry oem tool bag.

I have an old pleather jacket I might be able to sacrifice to the cause.  It's pretty heavy material.

The rear fender mounts extend below the reach of the cowl.  I don't want to cut those off, nor do I want to chop the factory seat hinge.  Because once you chop, you can't stop. (Lame pun I know) also not removing airbox or electrics/battery.

Eventually, I'll pick out a tail light and ditch the fender for the summer.  Can't decide on wether I want a cateye or a dual circle.  I do know I want a large tail light, for saftey.

Dunno if anyone has gone this exact route when making a seat.  i've never made a motorcycle seat before, and I'm open to  suggestions.  Especially in regards to what seat foam is good.
