Cb550. Electric issues. This bike will drive me insane
« on: June 20, 2016, 10:41:43 PM »
My cb550 is still giving me awful electrical issues.
I have done simplified wiring a million times and never had this issue before.

I will go over what I have done right now.

Electrosport reg/rec I believe it's the 240 or whatever is specified for cb550s
Three switch ignition switch
Dynatek ignition with 5 ohm coils
Agm battery

Reg/rec wiring
Yellow wires to yellow wires
White to field coil
Green field coil to green reg/rec wire to ground
Red to ignition
+ battery to ignition (same plug as reg/rec)
Black to power on

Dynatek
Red wire to power on
Blue to blue
Yellow to yellow

Coils
White to power on

I haven't set up starter or lights yet in hopes I could track this problem down
When I turn the bike on. It will drop from 12v to 3v in about 2 minutes
When I unplug the red wire from the dynatek which goes to switched power. Drain stops and battery immediately jumps up to around 7v and will climb from there slowly. This is without the bike even running.
All my grounds are solid.
Battery ground is to motor and frame.
Reg/rec is grounded at the coil mounts.
No pinched wires.
No wires touching.

Any help would be much appreciated as I'm about to rip my hair out over this

When you buy your new battery be sure to buy a battery tender as well and use it.   The CB550 just does not live well without one.  The charging system isn't very good.

these issues stopped for me when I switched to a shore lithium batt (and bought their special charger/reconditioner device for it -- you can't use a normal "tender").
I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.
