It was 60 today in Seattle (well at least in my neck of the woods).  Hot in one place, cold in another I guess.

I think I'll start an air conditioning business there. Just perhaps no-one else has considered the opportunity.

Kev

Swamp coolers work better than AC units there.

Not when it gets humid in July/August.
Was contemplating a ride last night or tonight before I leave town for a couple weeks, but I think not. I've got a 550 in Seattle that'll do the trick.
Toytuff, you ever go to Tuesdays at TT Roadhouse? I lived here '97-2013, moved back in Feb.

+1 on the swamp cooler, definite no in July-September when the monsoon rains are at their fiercest...  Most enjoy the monsoons, not if they live with only a swamp cooler. During the heat of May - June/July before the monsoons arrive the swamp cooler is hands down winner, but after the humidity creeps up and heat soars, not a chance.  Fall weather after monsoons are gone is much nicer and the swamp cooler become effective again.  I survived a moderate summer with a swamp cooler, prefer to have both or just AC if I can afford the bills.

Hate swamp coolers. The water out here is not the greatest either. Eats filters quick. Add to that the moisture they put out rusts everything. No, I'll tough it out in the Shop. Nothing important going on.

House is nice and cool. Few years ago I had the duct work replaced and lots of insulation in the attic. This heat is why we get up early and do the shopping at 0500 hrs.  ;) Hot days are for afternoon siesta and evenings for cocktails.

Well, 1900 hrs. and it's cooling down. 120 now. Low of 90 they say. Doubt it.

Haven't seen it this hot in many years. 110 to 114 later in week. Anything over 105 is hot to us but this is "miserable".

I'd put an AC unit in the garage if I could stand working out there without the door open.  For some reason I'm fine inside the house, but as soon as I go out in the garage, if the door is closed I start feeling claustrophobic.  Luckily I'm a Texas boy, so the heat and humidity don't really bother me.  It's sort of like riding in the rain.  You can only get so wet.

How many years have I been saying to air condition the Shop?

Every year I get closer to knocking a hole in the cinderblock and installing a big wall unit in mine.

I was able to work from ~9 'til 4:30 before it hit 100° in my shop today.
Then I went out and mowed the lawn for an hour because I'm insane... :o

Boy, if I could only knock out block. No, 220 on opposite end of house so it's a long run. Only other option is to use the dryer plug and run 25 foot of proper size wire. Unit would be a mini split system.

It's against code to run duct work to the garage from the main unit I was told. Love city codes.

Find it odd these pinheads want you to use wind power but city code won't let you put even a small one up.

Just googled a conversion to the more European norm :50,55°C

Yikes. Scalding as my GrandMother would have said.

Kev

As long as were converting temperature scales here.  Let it be known, I've used the kelvin scale absolutely zero times.

They make 120 V ductless systems, tt.  Order it up!

http://www.homedepot.com/p/DuctlessAire-12-000-BTU-1-Ton-DC-Inverter-Ductless-Mini-Split-Air-Conditioner-and-Heat-Pump-120-Volt-60Hz-with-25-ft-Complete-Kit-DA1215-H1/205934520

I saw those last year but wondered if it would be enough for my area. 550 sq. ft. It appears 12k is as high as a 110 volt would go.

Would be right at the limit however it's not like I would keep the Shop the same as the house. Price is doable. Have a box outside the house right where the compressor would sit. Pretty forward install.

Hmmmm..

First thing you need to check is amperage, I did not look at the specs. I would think the draw is somewhere in the 20A range.
You would prolly also want to insulate your garage door, that is pretty simple.

Now I am considering it too!

It's against code to run duct work to the garage from the main unit I was told. Love city codes.

This is a common restriction. I believe it stems from the nature of the potential lethal fumes that can be generated in a garage and to avoid the chance of contaminating the air in the home:

>Carbon monoxide from a running engine
>Fumes from stored gasoline
>Paint fumes
>Solvent fumes
>etc

If my garage ever caught fire I would be suggesting that the firefighters stand wayyyyyy back!

I've been considering one of those mini split units too. If your water heater is in your garage you can get a heat pump water heater that will add about half a ton of cooling to the garage as well.  ;)

Couple years back I special ordered a 2 inch insulated door out of Utah. Amish built.  :)

Made a huge difference.

Think I'll pencil this in around November. I put a bigger breaker in years ago due to a air compressor tripping the breaker. Could install a switchable box where the outside plug is. Probably a safer thing to do.

I also moved the sprinkler pipes years ago to allow for a small slab and compressor unit. I've thought this move out contemplating a mini system.

Makes sense that you are not allowed to run ducting out in the garage. Never thought about the chemicals.

I have told my neighbors if the house catches fire don't call anyone until you see the slab. Insurance is more than the value. I could then move to Eastern Arizona, say Pine Top.

Put something similar to this in my work room in Tempe, cranked it up half an hour before going out to work. Was still very warm in there but kept it decent enough to be able to work for a few hours without passing out.
