500/550 guys...points cam 180deg out?
« on: June 21, 2016, 04:31:22 PM »
Should the cam alignment notch be as is, pointed (somewhat) towards the hole in the plate on the right....or pointed towards the dot under the logo over on the left?
Trying to start the bike only gives me a hood-awakening backfire ;D

Different unit, but yeah, thats what did it.
This is from a 1974 550K
With the AD125-02 advance units, the points cam indicator mark aligns with the small round dimple (arrow) below the Denso logo on the 2/3 side.  This one pictured is 180' out

Curious mind inquiry.

What is the reason for total disassembly of the advancer?

Curious mind inquiry.

What is the reason for total disassembly of the advancer?
For maintenance, i.e. to clean and lube it so the points cam continues to rotate freely.

I put mine back in wrong the first time I did one, it backfired massively when I tried to start it, I simply switched the blue ignition wire with the yellow and as that fixed it, I never got around to turning the points cam back to the correct position :)

Sheesh, i musta really half assed my initial cleaning and lubrication.

Dunked it as once solid piece, shook it around, worked it up, dunked it again.  Let it dry and sprayed some aerosol lube up in there.

Worked as advertised.

Though prolly due for another cleanup and lube.  1 year and 7k later haha

For those who have difficulty seeing the little mark, it's in the white at 5 o'clock.

Mine, pictured above, sounded like a pepper mill when I twisted it, and was really crusty.  A brass brush helped clean it up over the better par of an hour.  Probably due to no gasket on the points cover  ::)

Note, there are several .003" shims to be aware of.
ONE on top of and One or TWO under each of the weights.  These shims help keep the weight parallel to the back plate of the unit.
Without proper alignment, the weights cannot reach full advance.    (Grab the toe of the weight and see how much up/down play is there)
..and anywhere from ONE to THREE larger shims under the base of the cam.

These should not be discarded, and they are high-wear items.
.003" brass shim stock can be purchased and new spacers cut, or, as I did, borrow parts from an unusable unit.
Thank you to HondaMan for this information.

Maybe I've missed it, but why would you take it so far apart? If I pry the arms open on mine, I can lift the cam for cleaning. I don't see wat good is taking the arms of.

Why would you not also clean and lube the posts that the weights ride on?  :-\

Nothing to clean on mine, but there will be if I choose to lube them which I won't (and have never done).

I'm happy for you that you will never have to clean yours.  Gold star for you.  You've maintained your bike well.
The PO of this bike ran it, for years probably, with no gasket on the inside of the points cover, and its movement was literally crunchy.
It was prudent to clean all of it.
With the proper points cover gasket now installed, there will be no need to clean this one, ever, with or without lube.
