By wipe down before paint, I meant to say wipe down with acetone.  That will help provide a clean surface for the clear to bond to.

Ive decided im just going to sand (scotchbrite and polish them) and call it a day. Got all my tools ready. have a nifty buffing and polishing drill bit. Will do some by hand, some with the bit

On a side note, where did you buy your hoop and seat from?  And it looks like you didn't weld the hoop on, did you?

It goes without saying but use care when maneuvering the drill bit around the spokes.

The Mrs gave me 30 mins to polish one of the wheels tonight before Daddy duties This is how far I got. Forget mothers polish (which I got) and scotchbrite and all that. I usewd fine steel wool and it ROCKS. Look!

If you can find a polish that will remove that level of oxidation and pitting I'm all ears. I have yet to find a substitute for progressive sanding and buffing that will produce good results, with equipment and material costs that are reasonable for the hobbyist such as ourselves.

I actually have sand from the beach that Im mixing in

What beach did the sand come from?

Hamptons. East Hampton to be exact. Ill be there this weekend under the gorgeous weather. The Mrs puts sand in avocado and honey to exfoliate her skin. I bring some home, usually a bucket, to put on the sidewalk in front of the house in winter when it snows. Less destructive than rock salt. And free!!!

Use a little of the polish with the steel wool. Works great, but leaves a black residue you'll have to wipe off with a towel .

Lucky you didn't have nearly the surface pitting bloo's wheels had.

Steel wool didn't get me results like that.

That outer hub looks decent. How are the ribbed, centers coming along? That's definitely the trickier section.

I love the cotton rope idea that seanbarney posted, can't wait to try it on my PO rattle canned black hubs. I already got the outside clean with 'gumption'(a cheap household cleaning paste product), followed by metal polish for the final shine. I should be able to do middle area the same way using rope instead of rags. :)

I'm not sure what will help to clean the ribbed center portion of the laced hubs.  With the spokes in the way, it is difficult to get anything in there to achieve a uniform polished finish.

Keep the PMA (positive mental attitude) and limber up those digits.
