Curious your thoughts on this crash video
« on: June 24, 2016, 11:21:38 AM »
You can skip to 5:30 to watch the collision.
Riding into people isn't good, but stopping in the fast lane isn't either. Curious on your thoughts as to who's more at fault.

I think they're both at fault, but more so the guy who's stopped in traffic.

from what I see it looks like there was a turning lane... so why was he stopped in the middle of the road? you can see the rider look down at his bike then back up. my only thought was the rider thought the guy in from may try and turn left and wanted to pass him on the right and just mis judge how much room he needed. as to who's at fault the rider behide is at fault attest thats the way I've been taught that if you rear end someone for any reason most the time its your fault.

Guy who slammed into him from behind is at fault -- you should always be ready to stop for the person in front of you in case they have to make an emergency stop for whatever reason, even in the middle of the road. The guy was just sitting there -- for whatever reason -- and the guy behind him just slammed into him.

Apparently it was a big group ride and the stopped guy was blocking traffic on the left. There was also a guy on the right side blocking traffic.

I understand and agree if you hit someone from behind it's automatically your fault, but I'm curious if there's a scenario where you'd be off the hook. With bikes weaving around to avoid the stopped guy it could be very hard to tell what's in front of you.

I'm not a fan of group rides like this, one goes down and it's like a domino effect.

I don't think there is an instance where if you stop in a lane and get hit from behind where it would be your fault. The only instance I can think of is if you are intentionally blocking traffic from moving forward like when those mental midgets close down freeways to stunt. Then you would be liable for any property damage or other injury.

By law you have to leave enough stopping distance between you and the rider/driver in front of you. If you don't you rear end someone. That's where the fault is.

Understood, I just thought it was a crap decision to stop in the lane jeopardizing others. If the other rider was looking ahead the whole time he could have swerved...hopefully not into someone in the right lane. And considering it's an intersection, an even worse time to do a head check.

Stupidity all around. The light was green and the group was small, so no reason to stop in the middle of a highway lane to block traffic. And even when stopping to block traffic you shouldn't be taking up space in the lanes being used by your group. When riding at the back of the group you should ALWAYS be looking forward.

Agreed, but apparently this was the tail end of a 600 bike group ride. Doesn't change things though.

IMO - the guy who ran into him is completely at fault.  Stopped bike/car/bus whatever - need to be able to go around it.
