So when I rebuilt my trusty 1978 CB750K I chose to install the Cycle X Tri-Y exhaust with the Cone Engineering 12" megaphone muffler. I've been riding this setup close to 2 years now and It's been pretty sweet. I use my bike almost daily and ride it in the city for most of that. Recently I've had the inkling to try the 18" Quieter Core muffler after hearing about them from some of you on here that have used them with your 4 -1 exhausts. My goal was to see was to see how the bike performed and how much quieter it really is.

So first impression. The pipe fit up pretty easily. The biggest obstacle was the fact that Cycle X puts tack welds on the 12" megaphone to hold onto the header, but those broke loose pretty easily. At startup idle is noticeably quieter obviously. It still has that throaty growl like the 12" megaphone has, but with a bit less of a barky sound. The overall feel of acceleration is smooth and peppy. It definitely still has that great Cone sound, but it's much more smooth sounding. I have yet to take the bike on a long trip on the highway where the 12" megaphone really starts to get pretty loud and droney. I'll report back when I get the the chance to do that. For now here's some pictures. Eventually when I have more time and won't be riding all the time I'm going to blast and do some VHT header paint on the pipes.

Another fan/user of the same slip on. When the RPMs are up (which the bike likes anyway), the thing sounds great. I had a 70s Mac slip on before this, but I've heard the Cone Engineering shorty slip on (no baffle) too. 18" Quiet-er Core is a great choice I think.

Hey Mr. Freeze, I have one on my 78K and love that muffler. To me it sounds perfect, nice deep muffled rumble but when you really get on it, that thing screams....Sounds so good. I'm glad I went with the Quiet-er core as opposed to the straight through muffler , although the others that i've heard sound awesome too... Also the construction from Cone is just perfect, the welds and the brushed stainless finish is literally perfect. Glad you like it. Take it easy.

Oh Evanphi, That's sweet man, Your the one with the blue CB!!! I watched your video and FLybox's many times before I got my Quiet-er core. Cool bike buddy. The muffler really is perfect to me, heard the other straight through ones and they do sound good too but this one is my favorite.

I got to hear the straight 12" on my 750 before I installed the 18" QC.
My welder was in the process of doing a 2:1 on his airhead, and was finishing it in a 2.5" straight core.
We put it on my bike.  It sounded great, but it was too obnoxious.  Id go deaf on long freeway runs  ::)

Agreed on the straight core. If I had a round-town-runabout/show-bike, I'd probably put a straight cone on just for how awesome they sound... but where I ride this one so much I KNOW I would get sick of all that noise.

I love my quiet core. I want new headers now, though, that I could just swap out my MAC headers. Sick of painting. Going to wrap them to keep a little more pretty than current.

Ill vouch for the 12" being a bit loud. I wear plugs on longer rides or my ears start ringing. Rinning the same cycle x tri y and short cone muffler. Looks like a good compromise with the quiter core on there!

FYI, that header paint is garbage. I tried it TWICE. Baked right off. Not worth the effort. Get them ceramic coated.

Why I switched to the quiet core, loved the sound but my ears would ring.

So I finally hit the highway and rode the bike extensively. Definitely a real nice sound. The 12" straight core used to sound like I was flying a cropduster airplane which while kind of soothing in a way gets to be annoying at the same time. The Quieter Core also has that extra 6" of length so the tone is coming out much further behind which makes a big difference. I'm really digging it. I thought I would miss that growl all the time, but I'm really not haha.

FYI, that header paint is garbage. I tried it TWICE. Baked right off. Not worth the effort. Get them ceramic coated.

VHT is garbage? Most people that report about it with the proper prep and application seem to have good things to say from what I've read.

I mean for a Tri-Y race style exhaust the 12" cone makes sense and I understand why Cycle X sells it that way seeing as how they sell racing parts alongside their other stuff. That type of muffler liked to live at 3500 RPM and above. I've found that with the 18" muffler now the low end has gotten a little more responsive probably due to the increased baffling.

Speaking of which, if anyone is looking for a cheaper 12" muffler, I'm selling the old one on here.

Any fitment issues with the centerstand compared to the 12" version? I have less than 1/8" clearance between the 12" and the stand. Looks like the longer muffler clears the same if not a little better, but hard to tell from the pictures.

Yes, there is/was a clearance issue w my kerker header.
I had to add a 4mm shim between the rear peg mount and my bracket to move it outward for 1-2mm clearance.
When i'm on the bike, it is not a concern.

No I don't see anyway to remove it.  It is part of the muffler.

Do you think it could be made removable..? I prefer the 12 inch for looks but would like to baffle it a bit more...

Not without having to cut the muffler apart.

I too prefer the look of the 12". I run a pair on my cb360 build. My 750 since it's longer wheel base the 18" looks not too bad.

IMO it's quieter in a way where it still has the throaty sound but toned down so it's more bearable. If your an open pipe kind of guy then the 12" fits the bill. The quiet core with the increase back pressure gave me more low end grunt off the line.

The quiet core seems to have a smaller pipe running through it whereas the straight core just looks like perforated baffle. I've asked cone engineering to make me a 12" quiet core but unable to for a few reasons that slip my mind. Here's some pics of my mufflers
