Vacuum gauges
« on: June 30, 2016, 05:42:22 AM »
Can anyone recommend a good vacuum gauge set to help sync carbs on the CB400F.
Many thanks,
Rob

+1  I have similar.
Just calibrate them to one cylinder before use.

Yes, you can do that but not simultaneously.

I just got a Carbtune tool after using mercury gauges for years. The Carbtune set is great so far, and I can travel with it. And, because of the Brexit vote and resulting chaos, the dollar is very strong against the pound making it even cheaper. http://www.carbtune.com/

I think I'm going to try these. Easy calibration, or are they pre-set?
Many thanks,
Rob

If you are asking about the Carbtune, no there is no calibration needed on the tool. All the adjusting will be done on the carbs. Make sure they are clean and you bench sync first. The 1/8" drill bit trick works well for me.

The easiest, best way to check the calibration on vacuum gauges is to get three rubber tubing tees, some rubber tubing and a syringe. Connect so you have 4 ports to tap into with the gauges and one for the syringe. Pull some vacuum approximating the normal operating range with the syringe and all gauges should read the same. An absolutely accurate method to check this tooling. In doing so all gauge set types become equal in accuracy. Analog gauges which are the best value have adjuster screws under the plastic covers. Analog gauges can sit flat or upright and do not care about position.

And still another Morgan Carbtune owner since 2007. No calibration needed. Mine have been working flawless all these years. You can go with a cheap set up, but the carb sync is the last item on the tune list. You can do all the other stuff to the bike, but if you can't get a good sync the rest is just fluff.
