Topic: fibermold tank mounting done, and now petcock Q? (cured)

 Does anyone (Frank?) remember mounting the fibermold tanks by trimming the Honda front rubbers?  I'm wondering if there is a better way, I threw away all the cut rubbers I had because I never owned a bike that still had it's fiberglass tank. Until a couple years ago. The molded cups aren't as large as the honda rubber mounts.

I'm thinking of mounting it as soon an I get the caswell to line it with.

I think Bill Pellerine has mounted his. My buddy ran one in the seventies, but. I don't remember any mounting details.

 I kept getting these old rubber mounts off junk bikes with the bottom cut off. I realized those bikes had had this tank.  I'm wondering if I can cut down a combine bushing or a shock bushing. I guess with a flat side it can't rotate out though I don't want to mess with the fibreglass if I can avoid it.

don mine fits right on,no trimming,and the rear mount lines up too,using a stock rear mount,but gotta stretch it a bit as the fibremould tank has thicker mount at rear,trimming front mounts easy.billp

  Thanks bill, I also got the rear mount on. So there were some made with the correct width cups. This tank was on a 500 back in the day. It's been resting since the late 70's.
  I'm going to trim the outside part of the front mounts a little and not slice clear through like the old ones I've seen before.

 I shaved both the tank and the mounts. This shows the difference, about 3/8" over all.

 I posted about the petcock not shutting off in the main sohc thread but now it seems the issue may be with the tank. Has anyone else experienced trouble getting a petcock to close on a fibermold glass tank? I know it sounds stupid but the same parts work on a Honda tank then they leak through on the fiberglass tank.

 The screws on the fibermold tank are standard thread, I put some small washers then snug o rings under the bolt heads. That sealed it up for now so the problem was the screwheads leaking past, even with my homemade gaskets. Now the question is do I trust the o rings to hold fuel? I did order new Honda washers for a couple of petcocks i'm refurbishing
  It might be best to drill and tap the bakelite mounting block for Metric screws, then the factory washers will fit properly.

Don, I use extra rubber washers made from slicing a bushing in half on my CL77 tanks............so far they have lasted 10-years. One potential problem with the fiber tanks is a small amount of flex if too much effort is needed to operate the petcock. I had a similar tank as yours on my '67 CB450

don are the holes for the screws in your tank blind holes,or do they go right through the bakelight block?mine are blind holes don't have a problem so far.bill

 They're blind but are 10-24 bolts which are smaller dia than the honda screws. I got new Honda petcock screw fiber washers today. I bought 6 for the princely sum of $25. W0W. About the size of this O lol. 6 ngk plug caps and a pair of fork seals wiped out four twenty dollar bills. HA!
