Transmission case sealer: limited options/tight timeline
« on: April 09, 2017, 08:18:36 AM »
Hi Gang, I putting the halves of my bottom case back together either tonight or tomorrow and my options for sealer are limited to these 4 due to local availability and a tight timeline: Threebond 1211, Permatex ultra gray, Permatex ultra black and Permatex aviation form-a-gasket. Please limit recommendations/expereince to these products as I know there are others available, I just can't get HondaBond for example for at least a week. thanks in advance

Can you get the Yamaha brand local?  I have always used the hondabond

Except for the aviation goo, all are silicone. DO NOT use silicone: the excess squeezed inside the case forms little balls that fall/break off and those can cause nasty problems.
The aviation stuff is OK if you're desperate, it make the cases rather difficult to re-open once it hardens.
Yamabond or Hondabond is the recommended sealer.
Whatever you use put a very thin coating on. When you tighten the case bolts it will be squeezed down to almost zero thickness... the excess just oozes out. Permatex aviation sealant is black and makes quite a mess when it oozes out. Honda/Yamabond is light gray and easier to clean up as well..

I was under the impression that hondabond and ultra-grey were similar products?  I've used both on valve covers and clutch cases.

Its easy to apply with a wooden tongue depressor.  Not too much, be patient, and be neat.  Let it cure for greater than the recommended time before introducing oil to it.

Given those choices, form a gasket only because it's not silicone. Threebond 1194 is close to hondabond.  As a side note, my 1,000 hp dragster dragster has a 12 bolt rear end with an aluminum bracing cover. With a gasket it moves around. With hondabond it sticks and doesn't leak or move.

Trying to seal the cases doesn't seem to be a good idea if you're limiting yourself to a tight deadline and products that may not be ideal.

May I ask why you're trying to rush this process?

I hope one of us here will send Raymonty a half tube of our Honda/Yamabond to do his cases right  ;)
I'll be moving at the end of the month and you know what happens to that tube if it gets squeezed too tightly in a confined space.. the shelf life is small on it anyway.I have almost a full tube of Yamabond 4 that i could send out today only Raymonty is up in Ont.,Canada and i doubt it would get to him by tomorrow..

Is Canada really that tough to find this stuff. I can't believe there isn't a Honda or Yamaha Dealer in a city of over a half million people?

Hondabond is the best I have tried, no leak at all. Black and blue tube
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OEM-Honda-Bond-HondaBond-4-Semi-Drying-Liquid-Gasket-Sealant-3-5-oz-08717-1194-/371592993458

I used  Permatex Aviation black/brown stuff at last rebuild and I have seen small amount of perspiration at front. I hope it will heal by it self. I'll clean the surface with acetone, spray an additional layer of engine paint and see if it cure it.
Maybe the first break in with 10W-40 and 0.6L too much oil had a negative effect. It might be better now.  I applied a very thin layer, not enough to be  squeezed inside the engine.

Now that we're talking about recommendations, I've used Loctite 518 and love it. Only cures when the cases are together so there's no rush (matters to me because I'm not too experienced with case sealing having only done two motors). The uncured goo that squeezes out inside the motor dissolves in warm oil so it can't clog passages. After it cures it's still soft which makes it super easy to clean after disassembly.

I also am a fan of Loctite 518. I used it for a Triumph engine rebuild and it's neat stuff. Stuck with the tried-and-true Threebond 1184 on my 750, but could see how the Loctite would also be good for this application. It's marketed as aluminum flange sealant and I know it's also used for aircraft engine cases, which have two aluminum halves just like our Hondas.
