Topic: Bike pedal kick start

I have been wanting to build a kickstart arm with a bike pedal for a vintage look.  I have a flux core welder and lots of old bicycle parts and I might even have a old kickstart on a parts engine.  Has anyone done this?  I will be reinstalling the electric start that was removed by the original builder so I will have a backup if the kickstart brakes.

I would make a bullet shaped bung that is threaded for the pedal, then you can get good weld all around the arm.

I never heard of a rider who used the electric starter as a back up if the manual one didn't work.

Those "bullet shaped bungs" are already available at your local bicycle retailer.  Ask for pedal spacers, they may have some on hand if they deal with riders that have knee alignment issues.

And they're hardend steel iirc.

Backup incase my welds fail. Lol there is something oh so satisfying about being BA and kickstarting my bike in front of a bunch of "tough guys" on there new Harleys with all the bells and whistles that I have on my Oldman motorcycle, then there is the Nostalgia takes me back to my old CB 350 with a bad starter.

So would you then just cut off the peddle and dish out the arm to weld that on?  I'm not sure how well this welds which is why I am asking.

Something like that, they should weld up fine, as guys used to shorten the kicker arms.

To use the HD ones you would have to weld the top of an HD kicker on to hold that pedal.
Far cleaner to make a tapped bullet shaped bung, to weld on. Bicycle kickers then to be 7/16 or more often 1/2 fine thread in Left and Right versions..

I was thinking about using a round crank from a bike and cut and weld it to the kick arm.  Again just didn't know how well it would work. 

This is the the look I'm going for (these are easy to find in my town)

While that pedal looks cool and authentic vintage, the design is prone to breaking apart.

There is not that much stress on the pedal,  you can crank them by hand...meanwhile on the bicycle, some stand on them everyday..
 If the pedal wears out,  just unscrew and replace it.

I forgot to mention that the other reason I want the bike pedal is that most of the joints in my right foot are fused causing it to hurt so the larger contact patch to take presure off my foot
