2012 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic
« on: July 04, 2016, 04:44:31 AM »
 :-\
I know this isn't a Harley site and to some here HD is a bad word, but  their are a few here like myself that have them a like them. Ok a friend of mine who is about 10 years older than me(so he's pushing 70 or better) and doesn't ride that much anymore is selling his and wants to know if I would want to buy it. Looks brand new and has less than 12K and loaded down with everything you can think of and than some ;D Asking $18000 ::) WOW That's not a type-o and he for sure is on the high end of what they are going for on Ebay and CL and he would have to come off that price a chunk before I would even start to think about it. Yeah I know that would buy a bunch of sohc4 Honda's and parts.  Not even serious about of course really but just thought I would post it to here some feed back ;)

My fault thought I had this in Other Bikes section!

Yup, $18grand is $4k over dealer retail value.  Friend of mine paid $14 for his off the preowned harley dealer.
Probably held it's value in the three years he's had it.

11K-15K is the average for that year, but it's hard to beat an Ultra for eatin miles on, I miss having one.

Under powered, ill handling, over weight and over priced. Sounds like a great deal.
But seriously, there are plenty of nice low mileage HD's for $10,000+ less out there.
Buy one of those if you need one of these antiquated, Mexican/Japanese/American motorcycles and spend the 10G you saved on a nice long road trip. JMHO

IMO Harley's are very good solid bikes. Expensive they are, no doubt about that. Are they worth that price tag, just depends who you ask. I've owned my 1997 Wide Glide for over 15 years and its been a great bike. Only problem ever was when the voltage regulator went out on it several years ago. I love the sound of my CB750's with the HM300 and 341 pipes but on the other hand it hard to beat the thump of the EVO V twin on my Glide ;)

I loved my HD touring machines and will soon be getting another, the SOHC just isn't comfy, heavy, or smooth enough for us to do any serious 2up touring on.

Don't ride an 09 or later with the new frame....you'll be ruined!  ;D

When I talked to Scott (columnist from ER mag) in 09 he had 450,000 miles on his Evo eGlide..
Said the motor was getting tired, it was the second motor.
So I don't know if he meets 500 K on the two motors.
There were several hi miles very twins in mybuddies shop, one had around 300,000, and the other 400,000.
There was also a week old bike in three getting an 140inch S&Service getting put in it.
They seem to work pretty good to some folks, and I see many of them on the road.. Maybe. As many as any other single brand.

I had an 03 in my old shop with shut-down issues that had 179,000 on it.  Ended up being a cam sensor, other than that he said that it's never let him down.  I had an 05 Road King with all the suspension mods (revtech and progressive) done and made the mistake of riding the new frame...it was a night and day difference in feel and stability even with the stock suspension, and I hear the new Rushmore series bikes are even better but haven't rode one yet. When I retired I sold almost everything I owned to get to 0 debit and pay cash for my present digs. I've been saving for another HD touring rig, I've had GW's and a Voyager but I'm not into the "plastic fantastic" machines that you sit on top of. You sit down into an HD and with the right bars and pegs it's like riding a lazyboy...hence the name road couch that they have been given.

Your friend must really like his bike to ask that much for a 4 year old bike.  I think 11k to 15k is more like it, especially if he has lots of expensive options on it.  They are extremely comfortable road bikes. Not as under powered or ill handling as some folks may suggest.  Are they fast like a modern sport bike,  will they handle like a factory race bike, hell no.  But what they will do is give a comfortable ride for you and a companion and you can ride all day.  You won't find many older sport bike riders that can ride all day without being pried off the bike at the end of the day.  I've ridden H-D touring bikes for the past 20 years and have been able to ride 700 mile days without torturing myself.

That's a nice bike Dwight, but silly money in the land of HD's, I'm sure you could get a way better deal than that? I was looking at a "one owner" CVO Road King here in Oz for less than that, and it was a magic bike, but I bought my Sporty, my BMW R1100GS, my CB750K1, 2001 Yamaha FJR1300, 1969 CB750K0, CB750K2 and my Honda VFR750 for about the same as the CVO would have cost me, and I'd rather have all 7 of them than just one bike. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I rented that exact bike in blue down in Orlando a few years back. Let me tell you, as someone who had never ridden a bike of that size, I was getting down on it pretty well. It's funny because it actually handled way better than any softtail that I've ever ridden. It had more ground clearance, and obviously a much more comfortable ride. Honestly, I love my honda. I get more looks than any Harley, but if I were to buy a brand new bike, like I told terry, I would go for a new Indian or possibly a roadking. I thought seriously about the vaquero, but it got mediocre reviews. I really like the older Valkyries but the new one is strange, as are a lot of new Hondas, and Yamaha isn't making the Silverado, so really what is there other than Harley? Victories are the bastard child of American motorcycles. Nothing against their engineering, they are superb. As much as I love to hate on Harley for their shortcomings, they're nice motorcycles. They need to figure out what the next step is, because the sporty engine hasn't really changed in years and the big twins keep getting bigger. Which is weird because there was a dyno test that showed the 96" and 103" made the exact same power. If I could find a clean drifter, I'd probably buy that.

I have to second that.  Not that particular one, but Harley came out with their Screaming Eagle line and to me they look like something I'd own.  They look like street bikes - something you could ride around town.  Still wish they'd build one that came with reasonably quiet exhausts - but at least they've changed their look.

My thoughts exactly..... 8)

As for the pipes being too loud on that Sportster XR(?) I'll bet that from the factory they are not very loud as they must comply with the feds on noise restrictions.  After market performance and others are another matter.
