Topic: Electronic Ignition

I'm looking at electronic ignitions and want opinions and pros and cons that people have had. My current ride is a 1978 CB550.
I've seen the Hondaman ignition and was leaning towards that, but am open and eager to hear others opinions.

I'm using the Boyer Bransden and I'm more than happy with that.

Bloke I know has burnt out two dyna 3 ignitions on his Honda. Just put Hondamans on my KO and am happy with it.
Have a dyna 3 on my old moto guzzi and it made a big difference and is still going strong.
Am no expert but I have not heard any bad wraps about the Pamco's.

i'm also using boyer-bransden and it's working well. had some trouble with water getting to the electrical connections of the coils but since i sealed them better, it's all good.
i thought once i go electronic i might as well go all the way and get rid of the mechanical advancer as well. that's why i did not go for a "hybrid" like pamco or hondaman.

Dyna S on my 74 CB550, never a glitch and still running strong after 11 years.

 Pamco on six SOHC4's and four XS650's and never had a problem.

Old coils might be too old too? New Dyna 5 ohms (black) with Hondaman ignition that also need a std Point plate.
I have NO problems with the mechanical advancer after tightening the sloppy springs that advanced way too early. This was with Pamco that blew the electronics on 2-3 due to problems with crappy ultimate coils shipped with the set.
Tightened the springs by cutting each 1/2 wound and it ran good with next ignition, Dyna-S with Dyna 3 ohm coils. This setup drained the battery within an hour test drive so I returned them and got 5 ohms instead. No problem except for my lost trust for the electronics. I ordered Hondaman ignition and NOS TEC plate from Jtmarks77. Ran it as OEM for 200km, then Hondaman ignition on.
The ignition works well from idle to 10.000rpm and probably more....
Now no condensers. I'll add them just for sure abd see if something will change.

I've got the C5 (Powerarc) multi spark ignition and love it.
The performance difference on my bike where immediately noticed.
Previously had Pamco and Dynamic ignitions.

It's pretty much plug 'n play. The advance curves (selectable) are preprogrammed.
The only complaint is setting static TDC timing. Without the factory advancer TDC must be located using a piston stop and degree wheel. Once set, everything works like a charm. Sorry, no dyno graphs to share. Set of the pants dyno IA all I've got.
Bike ran considerably stronger in midrange and idles perfectly.

Not having seen a cycle x unit - Would there be any feasible way of keeping a 1/4 t.f mark with the install?

Moe, a few years back, Dyna had a bad batch of ignitions, lots of failures, they seem to have fixed the problem now....

I think it really depends on what makes the most sense for you.  My entire points were shot from the points themselves to the condensers so Honda mans unit wasnt really the best idea for me since Id have to also buy new points so I went with Pamco.  That being said I am 100% going to put Hondaman's unit on my 750 F that has good working stock points and condensers!

I have the Power Arc ignition and I love it. It has a user freindly web page associated with it from the manufacturer, and you can tune the advance as you see fit. It is not the top of the line programmable version however.

I would recommend it.

Same here but it's only been in the bike for a bit over a year now so way too soon for a long term evaluation, the only issue so far is that I'd like to use a rev limiter with it and so far it's unclear if one will work with it and I haven't gotten a response back from BB about it. It's advance curve is set so there's no adjustability to it but my F2 doesn't seem to mind it. I'm glad to see this hasn't turned into a debate as to which electronic ignition is better because there are actually quite a few to choose from and which one is better for you really depends on what you're expecting it to do and how much you're willing to spend. It would be nice to see a comprehensive comparison of all of them that are available but that would take quite a chunk of $ to purchase all of them not to mention the cost of the dyno time needed to test them all, not just to test any performance gains but see what kind of load each puts on the bikes charging system.

boyer can programme a rev limiter or also custom curve into their units. of course that's easiest before they ship it to you otherwise you have to send it in to them...

I had a Pamco which lasted 80 miles. Getting a refund, going to Charlie's Place. Hope I have better luck with it.

From hundreds of units used here, thats the first Pamco failure i've heard of, Peters service is second to none, I would certainly use one of his units....

Retro Rocket, you have GOT TO BE KIDDING. Google Pamco Ignition Problems, there are dozens upon dozens of complaints about this unit. To his credit, Pamco Pete is an honorable person, who it seems, refunds or exchanges without question, but this unit seems to have a very rocky reliability record. Seeing how long you've been a forum member, I find it hard to believe this is the FIRST problem you've ever heard.
