wiring woes
« on: July 12, 2016, 06:31:41 AM »
so I've been searching for a few days now and cant exactly find what I'm looking for. I'm trying to figure out how i can retro fit or use another wiring harness to get an electronic tach and speedo but still maintain an easy circuit to work with instead of the wiring nightmare of todays sport bikes. any help would be appreciated! if anyone has a layout of a wiring diagram if possible! just a little extra info, my bike is a 76 CB550k1 gixxer front end swap and I'm looking to use stock gixxer speedo and tach, plus led turn tail and headlights.

Yes actually I do have a few more questions, I'm going with a cycke-x and Dyna electronic ignition and single coil pack, do you know where I can get a complete wiring diagram for this bike? And my other question is about the speedo and tach, so you would connect that unit to the magnetic sensor for speed and then onto your ignition for rpms based off of the speed at the crank rather than the speed at the cam, if I'm correct then id like to ask if your or anyone knows of a what to clean up the wiring and update the circuits from mid 70's technology to modern day (if there is such and update). If not then I will try and figure out some way to hold all of my electronics so it's accessible but waterproof.

A complete wiring diagram is here in the forum. http://manuals.sohc4.net/cb500/service_manual/HSM500550_11.pdf
One of the three links at the top of the SOHC4 Forum home page is titled, Manuals and Technical Documents, once there click on the link to your specific bike, listed among other CB's at top of page. Once on your specific bikes page, CB550, you'll find a couple different wiring diagram areas to choose from. One link is under Manuals and there's also a chapter dedicated to a few different specific wiring subjects.

may i humbly suggest a Speedhut GPS speedo/tacho gauge for your application? its a GPS based gauge, so you dont have to wire up the magnet/hall effect part of it. one less wire and all that.
they make them custom for your application out in Utah, great customer service, and they look so #$%*in. they are pretty expensive ($400 or so) but by the time you add up all the other dingles and berries that youll end up buying, might as well have a nice gauge for it, right?

do it. you know you want to....

Check out Vintage Connections for fresh contacts, connectors, wiring, and the tools to do a proper job. It's not hard, and you'll immensely improve the reliability of your bike.
