Dupli-color paint recoat time
« on: November 17, 2016, 02:22:08 PM »
I have seen lots of posts about the dupli-color rattlecan paints and the recoat times, most of the posts are basically copies of the instructions. Of course I didn't read the instructions thoroughly and didn't follow correctly. I painted my triple tree a couple coats one day and the day after sprayed a couple more, now I read that if not all done with in one hour to wait 7 days before recoat. What can I expect will happen or should it be alright if I just wait a while before reassembly? The part were very well cleaned and prepped before painted and dried in the garage at 65F.
Yes I should read the instructions first,,dope

Did you apply primer?

The reason they want you to wait 7 days is so it can fully cure. You can always accelerate the curing process with UV lamps. You would likely want to scuff the paint before applying more coats if you wait more than 24 hours or so (not true with all paints, but that is a good place to start). This is purely for adhesion. I asked about primer because a lot of this will come down to adhesion and primer is key.

If you properly cleaned the surface, primed the parts and applied even coats, I suspect you will be fine. Keep in mind that Duplicolor rattlecan paint won't last as long as a two-part urethane paint. As long as you don't expect that, I think you'll be happy.

^^^ yes.
It has to do with out-gassing, and the ability for the layers to stick to each other.
(If the ambient temp is good, I'll lay coats with 10min tack time between)
Time will tell, but I think it'll be ok.  Warmer temps will help with remaining curing.  65F is a little cold.

This is an area that I especially need some education on. I have to push myself to read the instructions, in their entirety and be patient enough to not add another coat too soon. I probably should do some "Practice Painting", before I attempt to paint something that counts.  ::) ;)

Practice painting is a great idea....but you also need to practice prep. You've heard it before, but it really is true: 80% of painting is prep.

I prep'ed the body work on my first sandcast for a week before I started painting!

Yeah, I hear that, about the Practice Prepping too. I do know that, with a lot of paint, especially like Metallic Paint has to be completely redone, if you mess up. and I don't really cherish the idea of basically doing a "Double Paintjob" on anything. So, I will REALLY be trying to take my time and do it right, when I get to the point of doing any painting.  ;)

For the record, I painted that sandcast FOUR TIME before I felt like I had it the way I wanted it.

When I was touching up spots on my old truck with duplicolor perfect match.  It was real important to give it the 10-15 minutes between coats.  The chrysler intense blue pearl had zero 'pearl' depth if applied too thick too soon.

But I was able to do the color and clear in the course of a summer afternoon.

Thanks or the info, yes I did prime the parts with the duplicate-color primer/aluminium etching. So far it's been a few days and it's looking good so far, I'll turn up heat a bit in the garage if it's not too late. But while I was painting I had a halogene spot light a couple feet away from part which helped heat a bit more but not a consistent heat as it was only from one side.
