Hey Guys, I'm finally getting off the starting line with my build thread....been a long time coming. Just a little info on me and the build. Started riding when I was 25 and first bike was a 05 Sportster 1200C, now a 1208 with cams, slight porting, 2-1 exhaust, intake...yaddey yada. I wanted a project to restore/work on once I got into bikes.... I got the bug, hard. So searched for a while and picked up a 1978 CB750K with 17k on the clock...bike was mechanically perfect but needed the usual, carbs, cam tower pucks leaking (which before I knew better i thought was the head gasket), but overall a beautiful bike...stock 4-4 pipes and 100% original. I got very lucky getting this bike as I had no idea what i was looking for at the time. Got to take it for a test ride and fell in love instantly.... I was thinking "is this thing even on....So damn smooth and after taking it to 5-6k I thought I was going to blow up the motor. Mind you i was used to a Harley...ha-ha.

I re-built the bike from the frame up, Powdercoated frame, swingers, stands (Side/center) trees, all brackets, etc. and re-built the top half of the motor. It came out awesome and after pulling the PD carbs off about 6-7 times finally got it running very well.

Of course like many of us, I just can't seem to leave some things alone. It can always be faster, handle better, idle smoother, etc. Which has led me to this point. I've learned so much from all you guys on this forum about these bikes, and there are a lot of things I did not do on my 78 K that first time around. I didn't do the cam tensioner, rings, etc. I pretty much cleaned it up, painted the motor, polished covers, lapped in the valves, replaced all the seals and gaskets and pretty much slapped it back together.

Since then (a few years ago) I've met so many awesome people on the forum and became friends with people who have taught me more about bikes (especially these Honda's) then I would have learned in 10 lifetimes on my own..... It may be lame but I WANT TO GIVE YOU GUYS A HUGE THANK YOU AND SHOUT OUT, not just for the knowledge and info but for the help with parts and teaching a rookie the ways of the SOHC Jedi. A whole lot to list but Mike Rieck, Don (CB750 Cafe Racer), PeWe, Flybox, Chewbacca (Kyle), atm cycles (Tim), Honda-man (Mark), Jerry Rxmann, Edwardmorris (Rafi), Ricky Racer, I know there's more.... All you guys have helped me a lot whether with parts or info and have been super patient with me as I've come to learn all this info. This forum is the freaking best!! THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!

On to the good stuff.... Enough yackin'

Here's the plan, Taking my stock-ish cb750 K and adding the following:

 - Wiseco 836cc 10.5;1 kit (bored by JMR) - Mike Rieck is a straight up awesome guy, helped me so much.. can't thank    him enough
 - Head (392) Ported by JMR (Mike Rieck) - Stage 2+ (new cycle x super flow valves (oversize intake with stock sized exhaust), Serdi valve job, HD kibblewhite springs, Early style retainers/keepers, Cast iron Guides)
 - Brand new Webcam 63A
 - Cycle X Super Rods
 - Moto GPWerks Stainless 4-1 exhaust
 - D.I.D. HD Cam chain (should have bought a few of those Tsubaki's when I had the chance)
 - New Stock OEM Cam Tensioner
 - Balanced Crank (JMR Porting)
 - Classic Cycle City HD Primary Chains (f'ing sweet)
 - New Primary Tensioner (OEM)
 - APE Clutch
 - New Bearing Shells (Crank and Rod)
 - APE HD Cylinder Studs (HD Nuts)
 - APE HD Main Bearing Studs and HD Nuts
 - APE Adj. Cam sprocket
 - APE Manual cam tensioner
 - DYNA S Ignition ( still have to get the coils & Wires though)
 - RE-built 657B Carbs (currently jetted 40 pilot, 120 main, needles 2nd notch from bottom) with K&N Pods
       (not sure if this will be sufficient as I've never run the round tops, I have a bunch of jets though)
 - 2007 GSXR 600 front end - Still gathering some goodies from Cognito Moto  - Don you DA MAN!!
     - Galfer Wave Rotors
     - Woodcraft Clip-ons
 - Tarozzi Bolt on Rear-Sets (cognito moto bracket)
 - Koso Speedo/Tach Combo unit
 - Polished Covers with new NOS Finned Covers (clutch, Points, Stator, Starter)

I'm sure there's something I am missing but this will not be the only post on this one....I picked up a pretty nice 1978 CB750 F SS last winter that i've been getting some stuff for too but I think I'm going to do up the K because it's already Registered and titled in my name and on the road. The F did not come with a title and I'm pretty sure it's going to be a slight pain in the arse to get that so I figured I'm safer to put my money, time, and all these parts into a bike that I know I can ride when it's done.

I would love to get you guys' comments, opinions, and any advice (especially) that you may have. I know many of you have built these things up to be monster bikes and I am more than excited to join you in that club. I could have bought a new bike for all the money I've spent so far but there's something about these SOHC's that get's my motor revv'n. Fell in love with them the first time I saw and rode it and will have one in my stable until I die. This is by far the best Forum on the net and the members here make it so. If I forgot anyone above, I apologize. I hope you enjoy.

Just wanted to do a test photo up top...here's some more. Tried to make sure they're all up-right this now. May have to bear with me a bit this is my first real posting of photos and definitely my first build thread. i'll try to dig up some photos of the bike too as it is now. I will document every step of the way.... Motorcycles have truly saved my life....I wish I had found them a bit earlier in my life. Never have felt as good as when I'm on the bike and love learning about them and building them almost as much as I like Riding them. Hope you all enjoy. Holler at me with any questions or anything. I know some of you have been waiting on this thread...ha-ha.

Damn good start! It will be a different bike that's for sure. Looks like you have most of the spending out of the way. AND good practice for the F.

Eric great thread and will be following along. As someone who has a one-of-a-kind Mike Rieck head on my K2 motor that he put an 810 cc kit in I can tell you its truly a life changer. My K2 is one special bike and I always think of Mike when I am pulling some serious speed on the highway and ripping up the backroads. His work is absolutely outstanding and with a measured 71bhp on the K2, I smile every time I ride it....truly amazing.

Looks slow here but believe me it flies!

Thanks for checking it out guys. Now that the part's A-bomb has been dropped i'll try to bring it back to the beginning and go through everything in a step by step manner so I can get your advice and learn any tricks of the trade as I go along as far as what worked for you and what didn't work. I've checked out a member's top end build thread which seemed pretty awesome (BrandEn's) but i'm not quite there yet. All the parts gathered...time to get to work.

Andy, that bike is sweet...Love the earlier 4-4 pipes and wish I could get a set to fit on my later model. I've never heard a set in person (just you tube) of the HM300 or 341's but man, they sound awesome. Never have rode a hopped up 750 only my stocker so it's going to be a lot of fun for sure. The head is just awesome, almost want to just put it in a glass case on the coffee table....ha-ha!!! NEVER! Glad yours is running tip top.

      - If anyone is wondering whether or not to get them or how much beefier they are, i would definitely recommend them. I had never seen the two compared next to each other but the difference is pretty amazing.

Haha, Thanks Jerry!! I'm looking forward to it my friend! I'm super excited to see the difference from my old (probably terrible compression) 736. I just hand lapped the valves on my current bike and didn't do the rings or anything so I'm sure it's leaking somewhere...

Once i'm done with this bad boy, I am going to get going on the F ....i think i'm just going to do that one a nice clean stock 78 Super sport. I have everything I need for that all original except the darn Muffler!!! I have had a tough time finding one of the actual (black tip) 78 SS mufflers...i'm wondering if the design of them had them rusting out a lot or something.

I'll keep you guys posted!!! Thanks Jerry..Watched your 1000 video again this morning...thing is such a monster! Fires up like nothing too!!

Making some progress digging into the bottom end... Stripped two of the 4 screws that hold the main bearing retainer under the shifting mechanism... Have received a lot of help and great advice from members on this and I really appreciate it... Will be drilling those two off later and continue the tear down.. Motor is extremely clean inside so this should be a nice fun runner when it's done.

Ugh, not sure that may have to wait for a little bit. I think i'll run what i have for now and maybe change to the Hindle 4-2-1 down the road. I really love the muffler on the hindle and heard they make excellent power. But the moto gpwerks pipe is a beautiful piece too... HOnestly, just don't have a spare $600 laying around after all this!! Ha-ha.

It will be on my "wish list" for now.

Are you using an impact driver and correctly? Those screws should not strip out like that.

Hey Jerry, I was using a Vessel #3 JIS Impacta (silver handle) one at first and they began to strip a little.... Then I picked up a Heavier duty (real) impact driver at O'Reilly's and used the JIS Bit but two of them did strip out unforutnately... Going to do my best to drill the heads off tonight with a 1/4" bit and then remove that Bearing retainer.

From what I've heard the threaded stud should come out fairly easily after that with some vice grips or something.

I think I was using it correctly. I would hold it firmly and "load it up" towards the left and then strike it?? Maybe that is the incorrect way? If so, please I do want to know so I don't F' anything else up un-neccessarily. THank you Jerry

Its usually the countersunk section that corrodes in place, so once the head is out, the rest of it unscrews easily by hand.

With the help and advice of some of the members here I was able to drill the heads off my stick main bearing retainer without issue... Came out nice and clean...! Clutch basket out and it's about time to split those cases and get to the good stuff!!!

Thanks Mike, Yeah I couldn't believe it. I just loosened them with my fingers...pretty wild so like someone mentioned it must have been where the countersunk heads and the aluminum retainer touch eachother where it gets stuck up. Now for lack aof a better term, I can really get Crankin'...ha-ha.

Have to look into getting 2nd, 3rd, and 4th undercut while i'm all the way down in the bottom of the engine like that....If i'm going to do it, now is the time...ha-ha. Thanks for your help Mike....
