The 550s don't really have a viable option of HD primary chains, nor do they really need one. Brent Waller has used a Tsubaki cam chain with a modified, custom tensioner, but I don't know whether he ever sourced or felt the need for a HD primary.

BLAC, your motor will be absolutely fine without one.

I should be making around 175hp with my turbo/supercharger/nitrous setup though...  :P

Im more interested in getting a trusted brand than an HD one, I cant find OEM and don't know who makes high quality replacements

Maybe there is Cal, I was searching for a stronger primary Hyvo for my Kawasaki and found one at Cross and Morse, you need to know the manufacturer code of the chain, they may not have a heavier option, I was told the same for the Kawasaki, took me 10 minutes to find one, you have to have someone join the chain for you though, Maybe C&M can make them to length...?

Good news, All my parts arrived safely in AZ and are now in the loving arms of Mr. Nils at Restocycle !!! WOHOOO. he gave me an A+ on my packing job which was surprising, considering i used everything i could find to stuff those two big ol' boxes.... I'll post updates shortly... He is an awesome guy and i am so excited and thankful to have him helping me with my project.

Hey Ruckus,  I actually was not going to cover up that beautiful work with any paint/powder coat. However, i will make sure to talk to Nils about best practices when it comes to that. From what i understand the vapor blast not only cleans the metal up nicely, but also helps to "peen" the surface to help create a finish that painting is not necessary. However, i've never gone this route before so i'll be sure to let you guys know.

I would hate to have all this work done and then have to hide it..... We'll see though, so pumped for this!!!!!

If I were you, I'd ask Nils what he recommends.  The peened surface may not require paint, but it will not likely be impervious to oxidation and certain types of staining from oil/fuel.  It may require you to periodically clean it to keep it nice and new looking.  Just remember that you will not be able to reach every crack and crevice.  Nil should be able to give you INFORMED advice, versus my speculation.

As per Nils:

"Vapor blasting peens the surface very slightly and closes the pores of the aluminum as it does. I'm told that parts need very little maintenance just as is to look great for years, and a simple polish with something like Autosol is all that's needed to brighten it up again when you do."

and

"I use Autosol as well and another polish called Maas, both are excellent. I find that the black smudge is usually easily buffed off with clean micofiber, following the application and rubbing steps as long as it doesn't dry out before I do. Are you finding that the dried blackened polish isn't coming up? Or is it just drying too fast?

Carb cleaner is of course a super powerful solvent and not much withstands it, including this black dried polish stuff but I imagine it left behind a dusty chalky surface and gave you a headache to boot.  I'd suggest you switch to mineral spirits on a clean microfiber and try to remove the polish before it dries completely, then buff one last time with a clean microfiber cloth.

I use a protectant called Boeshield, others rave over a product called ACF-50, and there's another that is used in the UK and Oz that I can't recall at the moment, but I think it is a CRC product. Once you're happy with the appearance, I'd suggest a mist of that, followed by a fast buff with the microfiber.

Last thought: Aluminum inevitably darkens as the layer of aluminum oxide forms on its surface. This is a natural aspect of its aging, and can only be slowed down by either diligent cleaning as above and use of protectants, or by coating, clear anodizing, etc."

So there you go.  You can keep them clean with some diligent maintenance.  You will still have to contend with cracks and crevices, and surface oxidation -- unless you coat or paint.  Still, a LOT better than polishing or sandblasting.

I have been handling my cases and covers with gross dirty hands in the shop. It leaves smudges and fingerprints but as Nils said, it can be easily wiped down and brought back to new.

I cant speak for the test of time, but in my handling of it it looks like it is going to hold up nicely (with a little bit of love and attention, but nothing crazy like keeping polish bright as you stated).

I'd use Acetone to wipe them down to remove grease, grime and oxidation. Stainless brushes too would do nicely on knocking back the oxide layer without marring the peened finish.

Hmmm, Decisions, Decisions..... I really love the look of the "vapor blasted" finish, and would hate to cover it up. Nils recommended some type of spray/cleaner/sealer type stuff, I'll have to check the name...Boenshield or something?

I have the motor all planned out "color-wise" based on the cases being the vapor blasted silver, but i guess i could paint them if I really had to....

I have some beautifully powdercoated matt black side covers so the motor will be a combo of a satin/matte black and silver (or that's what i was planning at least)...I post up some photos of the covers and later. i'll toss around some ideas and see, but for now I'll probably just leave it bare (vapor blasted) ....

IF anyone has done this in the past and had negative results , please let me know... I would really appreciate it. THanks

^ Exactly why I had the crank cases done in black. Will hide some of the dirt and it will break the motor up some - in my opinion at least.

Nils recommends using the metal protectant called Boeshield T-9. He coats the parts with this before they're shipped back to you.

This is my idea (which i already have everything for the motor).... Cases (upper and lower) bare silver, Side covers, Matte black , Oil filter cover, starter cover, front sprocket cover (all matte black), Jugs matte black, The head (done up by the world famous Mike Rieck), Is already silver and ready to go, and then i have a beautiful matte black valve cover with some of Justin Webster's tappet covers and a matching tach plug in silver anodized.....

Kind of hard to visualize but I have thought it out a bit.... haha.

I will have to do all my research then make the best decision possible and ride the snot out of it!!! ha-ha.

Im thinking about doing a black cylinder with block sanded fins, or putting engine paint on a roller and painting just the fin tips black.  Ill start photoshopping my own motor once I get it all back from Mike.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, it's an electrical problem... If it's an electrical problem, it's Cal's problem.

If you're considering black on the head and jugs, use thermal dispersion coating (like powder coating) to actually aide in cooling your air hungry beast. Serves the aesthetic purpose you seek, plus provides the benefit of specialty automotive coating critical parts.

Hey Cal, That's solid advice, I will look into the best thing to do for it. I do want to have the cylinders done in black but am trying to find the best engine paint that i can for it. WHen I was up at Mike Rieck's he had done his valve cover with a PJ1 wrinkle black that looked extremely nice and was very durable according to him.

I wouldn't do the wrinkle but a satin (matte) black would be perfect. IF anyone has recommendations on a better paint for the motor , please holler at me.

I'm also not against powdering the cylinders, I just want to keep all the gasket surfaces (which right now are literally perfectly clean after Mike Rieck's work), Clean of any powder.....

NIls, sent me some updates of my parts, Some photos of the work that's been done already..... HOLY CRAP is all I have to say, this guy knows what he's doing....The parts look amazing!!!  I'll post some up shortly,
