Quick update, got a set of engine covers powder coated by a fellow member. They came out awesome.... the motor is going to be a nice combo of silver (aluminum) and flat black...

Little update, over the weekend I finally got my 78k (the project bike), back home. It was hanging on my parents barn all summer bacause I only had room for the sporty and the F... since the 78 F project is going to be for later, I brought the K home to start tearing her down. Now I can really get rocking on taking her down.

I know there has been a lot of part porn here, partly from this being my first project thread and partly this being my first really big project... I'll make sure to post the step by steps.

I welcome any feedback or advice you guys can provide. For those who have "been there, done that", thank you in advance...

Hey Don,  I'm tossing around some ideas for the paint scheme and have to save up to actually afford the paint and the seat. So for now I will probably use my current seat and tank (78K) which is still in great shape.

However, my final goal is to get an F tank that i have (which is in great shape internally and externally) re-painted along with a seat from Ian Halcott (your buddy). I was most inspired by your bike from the Moto channel and also another member's bike from the Moto channel (Orange bike at Twinline).... When I see my bike finished it will have the same tank/seat combo but still working on the details for the paint.

I'm tossing around a darker version of a pepsi blue (Civic Si blue but slightly darker) or maybe a black with some gold striping to match the forks. Either I think will look great with the Excel rims. The motor will be a combo of black and flat aluminum (vapor blasted) and the trees are anodized aluminum from Cognito with the hubs being the same color.....Stainless exhaust and stainless spokes on the wheels.

I don't want to complicate it with too many colors and have the bike look "busy" so trying to find a color that will work well with the rest. For some reason I've always really loved that color blue.

If the color speaks to you, go with it.  Limiting the number of colors is a good idea, too.

Now get those crankcases to Nils!

Hey Fellas, it's been a while since my last update. Hope the whole sohc crew has a great holiday and a Happy New Year! Got some fresh rubber on the front wheel and got my triple back so I can now mount the Koso speedo/tach combo to it...

I know Don, I gotta get me @$$ in gear with this cases.... too many ideas bouncing around in this noggin!! Haha. Will try to keep the updates coming of my progress...

I have to admit, I'm a wee bit nervous about doing the whole wiring job... I know I can and the m-unit makes it so much easier... fear of the unknown I guess.

I only say that because you cannot move forward with rebuilding the engine without the cases, and you already have most if not all of your engine parts.  Wiring can wait until much later, but you will want to map things out before you finish your frame mods and powdercoat the frame.

Hey don, that's me giving myself a hard time... you're 100% right! Those cases getting vapor blasted is the only thing holding me up from starting the motor... all new crank and rod bearings , trnsioners, HD chains, clutch, etc is all waiting on the shelf... i avuially got the frame, swongarm, motor mounts, brake stay, etc powder coated 2 years back... so I think it's all set.

I do have all few things o need to work out but like you said, the wiring can wait. Have you ever used one of the frame kits on a 750? I got one from Frank (754), I've just never used one so it makes me a wee bit nervous to cut my frame up... it would be nice to build the motor in the frame though!!!!

Let me know your thoughts.

Oh and my dad was cool enough to buy me a set of the tarozzi engine guards for x-mas, which I love but am not sure they really go with the look in going for... however I'm putting so much ( $ and work) into this motor it would protect the engine should the bike ever fall over....

Hey Thanks Blac, I actually got some parts from one of our own - Justin Webster. I got a set of his Tappet Covers, Tach plug, and Oil pressure gauge adapter.... If anyone is looking for any of those parts or new handlebar clamps, his parts are top notch, They're beautiful....

I guess i'm at that point where I really need to break down what it is I want to do first.

Saw that thing in half! It's only metal tubing and can be repaired if you screw it up. Or someone wants to return it to stock in the future. The advantages of a frame kit on a 750 are undeniable!

Good To hear, The kit is super nice and the clamps are BEEFY!! Probably stronger than the tubing anyway. I would really love to not have to take everything off the bike to do the whole engine on it's side dance again.... Saw-ing the frame it will be. I'll do some research on the best place to make the cuts for the kit.

Thanks fellas, yeah progress has been slow but in the end this baby will be 100% worth it! Here a Lil photo of a bit  more of the front end...

I still laugh when I think of my first phone convo with Mike " oh I'd like to keep it somewhere around $1,200- $1,500"...... he must have been cracking up inside thinking " this young fool has no idea what he's getting into"..... so glad I did though!

Hey Fellas, Quick buy important update... Got Everything Boxed up for it's trip out to Nils at Resto Cycle! Unfortunately, after sealing it up like Fort Knox, I weighed it and at 64lbs....it's a bit heavy.

So I'll be taking some of the stuff out tonight and putting into another box to make it more manageable. I do not want to have things damaged and the box was a bit heavy, weighted weird too (due to the cases) so it was weird to carry.

Within a few weeks they'll be back and ready to get all the brand spankin new bearings, clutch, balanced crank, super rods, and new primary tensioner and HD (Classic Cycle City) chains in..... SO EXCITED FOR THIS!!!!!

Quick Question,
    Has anyone reading this ever re-built their oil pump? After watching Dino's Hack-A-Week I'm thinking it's a good thing to do while the engine is torn down this far.... 

If so, I've seen a few kits online but if anyone has any recommendations, that would be awesome! I also see that Kenny at Cycle X sells re-built pumps which are actually priced very well. Just want to be sure this thing is in tip top shape when I put it all back together.
