Bad tank!!!
« on: November 21, 2006, 09:22:03 PM »
Hello sirs...I am a new person on here and I have been doing searchs for all of the great info you have posted. Thanks.

Here is my problem: Today I took the tank off of my project. I looked inside and just about puked. I know how to get rid of the rust and I can fix the one small leak in the seam. But, how do I get rid of the old tank sealer that is in there? It's broken up and flaking all over the place. There are chunks inside that are the size of a pancake. The coating is a translucent caramel color. Boy its gross. I got a chunk out and tryed different cleaners, acid, thinner, ect and nothing breaks it up. I think I may be doomed!!!

thanks!!

Never gone through this before, but just a thought might be to reseal it. From what I hear usually you remove the petcocks, put some small chain (like dog chains) in it, shake it all around to get the crap out of the inside without denting your tank,, take a garden hose and keep rinsing the crap out. Let it dry, or use some sort of solvent to quicken the process.. and reseal it with the tank liner. What ever doesnt come out, probably wont, and will probably last a lot longer.

Browse this earlier thread, it has some references on how to remove Kreem liner. Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

That Kreem stuff is awful IMO - I don't know if it always flakes up like that but I've heard enough horror stories (and ruined at least one tank with it) to think it must have about a 50 percent fail rate...

I talked to the paint guy at my work and we did some testing on the chunks of liner. We found out that our "Purple striper", which is super duty, desolves the liner in minutes. So on Monday, Im going to slosh the striper on the inside and brush in on the outside, and let it sit all day. We are then going to wash it out and apply metal prep to in so is doesn't rust. then Im going to TIG weld up the cracked seam, leak check it, and re-seal the tank with aircraft tank sealer. I figure if it works for airplane tanks, it should work for this lil' motorcycle tank.

I will keep you posted  ;D

Kreem Sucks.

I have used it on one occasion and helped others use it on two other occasions. It is an inferior product.

Check with POR. They have excellent products that work.

I like to FIX things also but in this case the advice to buy a used tank on ebay might be the best advice. A few dents won't matter as you plan to paint anyway.
