cb550 voltage going up to 15.5 Volts
« on: August 10, 2016, 05:53:30 PM »
Checking out my charging system..

Using alligator clips and bungee cord I ran a multimeter to my battery so I can monitor voltage as I drove the bike around the block.  I've found that I can reach some pretty high voltages when above 4000-5000 RPM.  I should top out at 14.5 so is this a problem with the regulator?  I was trying to follow twotireds post (its a step by step process floating around here somewhere)  but I don't think he mentioned what the case was for higher than normal voltage.. just for the case when the charging system isnt creating enough voltage?

Sometimes DMMs give funny readings. Have you blown any bulbs yet with what appears white smoke inside? If not, I wouldn't worry.

Might want to check your battery level to see if you are cooking off acid.

There is a regulator adjustment procedure in the manual.

turn the light on

..if the voltage goes dovn to 14,5 you are fine.

the problem is often the regulator(or mostly the vires and konnektions)
..it gets a to low volt feeling, at the control vire..and then make a falce regulating..thinking the voltage is too lov ,,and then turn up for the power...try the seargh funktion.
.korosion and bad konnektors (block konnektors) erth  konneltions..can make problems..dont  tru adjust the reg..first find the real problem..
i kan not speak english/but trying!!

Well I measured the voltage between the regulator and the positive terminal.  With the black wire unhooked I get a huge drop.. 12.22 at the battery with key on and at the black wire something around 1.59.  Clearly something is wrong.. something between datum #1 and datum #2 in the first image.  But I'm also a bit curious about some other readings I got.  When I measure voltage from the positive to the clip on the regulator for the black wire, with it unhooked, I get a 0.05 Volt drop from 12.22 at the battery.  With the black wire hooked in and measuring the voltage at the regulator I get the same reading as when I measure the black wire unhooked.  Am I reading the 0.05 V drop between datum #1 and datum #2 in the second image or is this also an indication of corrosion in the regulator shorting it out?

thanks again,

-Corey

This indicates a poor connection somewhere between the battery and the switched black wire. The power goes from the battery to the fuse box, then from the fuse box to the key switch, and from the key switch to the black wire. The fuse box is the first place to check, as the fuse clips are known to get corroded.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!
