New guy
« on: July 21, 2016, 07:35:57 PM »
Hi all,

I'm new to the forums and new to the CB world! I'm very excited to be a proud owner of a 1973 cb750. I am from Pennsylvania and found this forum while looking for tech help. I appreciate all things two wheeled and have a soft spot for vintage Japanese and British iron. I look forward to gaining some much need knowledge from all of you as no vintage bike bike would be fun with out its problems lol.

Justin

If by gap you mean the military base by grantville, then yes! I am in grantville as we speak! But no I have never heard of the breakfast. Not a legion member. It's on my to do list tho.

Gap near Lancaster-about an hour or more from Harrisburg via 283 and 30.  The breakfast is a money raiser for the Legion-no membership required. Hundreds if not thousands of motorcycles show up.  Google Ephrata first Sunday breakfast.

Ah yes I have heard of that! I actually went and looked at a bike near there. I will look up the breakfast. Thank you for the info. Unfortunately I will not be able to make the first Sunday in August. Hoping to have the bike back together by September so maybe then....

Off of N. Eberhardt Road - Cousin Barb lives up there.  Cousin Minnie is down in Denorah.  My wife's Mother was born in Beaver Falls.

Hi again,

I know this is in the wrong section, but I'm trying to figure out how to work this site from my phone and it hasn't gone well. Maybe the moderator can re direct this question. My question is simple. I plan on replacing rings soon and from what I am gathering, one must remove the engine entirely to perform this service. However I am confused as my old clymer manual seems to state otherwise? Am I reading it wrong or something? Can someone please tell me why it says this?

The Clymer is incorrect at least for a 750.  Is it perhaps for a 550?  I'm new to the 750 but from what I have learned if you want to do top-end work, you have to pull the engine.  The 550 can be serviced in-frame.

EDIT:  That will probably not be the only time the Clymer is incorrect.  You will be better off using the Honda service manual available from this site.

It is definitely for a 750. In fact it is only for a 750. I intend to use both manuals as I have heard of that before. Thanks for the quick response. I thought maybe I found some secret knowledge and everyone has been wasting time pulling motors out lol ;D

No, this side of the family is all west-coast.  We get back to visit once in a while, we were just in Pittsburgh visiting our niece earlier this year.  I know the correct pronunciation of "y'uns" - but that's about all the PA in my blood  ;) Pretty country, I bet it's fun to ride there.

Welcome to the asylum, Justin! ;D I'm over east of you in Willow Grove, north of "Filthadelphia".

Bike looks nice and clean. What makes you feel it needs a rebuild? How many miles?

Do yourself a favor and, as been suggested, go to the download page, get the shop manual for your bike and take it to Kinko's or some other copy shop and have it coil bound so it sits flat next to you while you're working on the bike. Also, as soon as you can get the 750 book from forum member Mark Paris aka Hondaman. Far better than the shop manual which, in turn, is far better than the Clymer!

When you have the download of the shop manual go to the section for the 3K checklist for tune up and do that service before you start tearing things apart. Many newbies discover that what they thought was a major problem has gone away after that! ;)

With our addiction to motorcycles in general, and SOHC4s in particular, I seriously doubt you will ever see anyone on this
forum making any grand claims to mental stability! ;D

Thanks for the advice RevDoc. I have downloaded the manual and have heard many talk of the elusive HONDAMAN lol. Would love to get his book if I wasn't sinking money into this bike. However the reason I thought the bike needed rebuilt was because cylinders 1 and 4 were always oil fouled and I had blue smoke coming out of the exhaust. Needless to say I just tore the motor apart and put her back together yesterday. What I had come to find was cylinder 4 had a puddle of oil sitting on top of the piston. So I replaced all the seals and popped new rings in her. Starts up ok, but I'm having carb issues. I think I might be lean? Bogs and dies when I pop it into gear. I am a newbie to 750s, however I am no stranger to motorcycle rebuilds. Seems everyone I get my hands on I always end up tearing it apart lol.
