Center-Stand Mounting Help Needed CB750
« on: July 22, 2016, 05:19:39 PM »
I have acquired a center-stand for my '74 CB750 because it did not have one when I got it. Now, I have the stand mounted but have no idea how the C shaped plate for the center-stand spring is fixed to the frame and where....exactly ?

c ring mounts to spring on one end. Other end of c ring goes on an "elbow" welded to the lower crossbrace of the frame.
Sort of like a half loop that the c ring end slips onto. opposite end of spring is hooked low on the right leg of the stand. You have the spring yes? It's a #$%* to get on, as you are fighting the spring tension trying
to hook it up at the frame end. Easiest way I've found to install spring is to inatall centerstand pivot pipe thru one side
only, leave the other side close to, but not inside the last clamp. this allows some wiggle room to get the c ring qnd spring
hooked up, then use the stand itself for leverage to pull the pivot pipe in line with the other clamp. sometimes it helps to install
a large screw driver thru the opposite side to assist you at this point. Once you have the stand and pivot lined up, hold it there and tap the pivot the rest of the way in. C RING INSTALLED W/ARCH SIDE UP at frame mount.

I mounted the spring with a screwdriver that helped it to snap on to the centerstand. It was hooked into the plate, centerstand in closer position and the screw driver could bend it to snap on at first try.

Don't forget the coin/washer trick with the spring. Load the spring with coins or washers to elongate it. Makes it easier to fit.

"Don't forget the coin/washer trick with the spring. Load the spring with coins or washers to elongate it. Makes it easier to fit". He's exactly right.

+1.  I love this coin trick.  It took a small pocket full of nickels to get my spring long enough but this is by far the simplest kick stand or center stand spring method that I have ever used.  Clamp one end of the spring in a vise and then bend the free end of the spring over to widen the coils.   Insert nickel.  Bend spring over in the opposite direction and insert another nickel.  Doing the coins on opposite sides keeps the spring straight. Eventually, the spring will be long enough to easily connect to the center stand and then you can remove the coins with a pair of pliers.

Yes, I have used the coin/washer trick before...great method.

However, a stroke of genius came over me today and I found another simple method ! I wheeled the bike over behind my truck and hooked one of my motorcycle ratchet straps to the tow hitch mounting plate and connected the other hook to the handle of my spring hook, which was already hooked to the spring end, took up the slack and easily pulled the spring in my direction and simply hooked the spring onto the center-stand spring perch/tab, slackened and removed the strap, then the spring hook and done....worked like a charm !
