Don't do like I did.....side stand.
« on: July 23, 2016, 11:00:18 AM »
Planned on going for a spin on my'78K 750 bike this morning.  Pulled it out of the shop pointed it toward the road, put it on the side stand and walked back into the shop to put my mesh jacket on and then I heard a THUMP.  To my shock, my bike was laying on it's side.  Damn.  I picked it up and found the damage.  My new replica bars bent, broken clutch lever, dinged up speedo chrome housing, small scratch on my top 4into4 pipe and a scratch on my new crash bars.  Damn.

First time I've parked the bike in front of the shop with the bike heading in that direction.  Damn.

I guess the good news is I had the crash bars on that I bought from ATM Cycles here on the forum.  It could have been worse.  So, now I need to pick up a clutch lever and a new speedo chrome housing.  I'm hoping I can bend the bars back as they aren't too far off.  Damn.

Don't do what I did!  Damn.

Tom,
Was the bike on a slight decline on the road surface? I've almost had this happen to me a few times after i had the orig. side stand hole welded shut and then drilled it out to make it as like new on the sidestand pivot which it did;the bike stands up a bit straighter now.. I'm trying to remember to park it on an incline so it doesn't roll forward while parked  :o

BB,

My other bike (HD) has sort of catch that "normally" prevents this type of issue.  Guess I didn't think far enough ahead.  My bad.  Won't happen again  8)

g2,

Yep, there is just the slightest decline in front of my shop.  I know that because when I push it in, I strain a bit.  Normally I push it out and it faces north, today it was facing east.  I've noticed that my side stand is a little sloppy, but up until this point, did it's job.  If I had it in gear, I doubt that I'd be writing this.  Live and learn.

Try accidentally going to kickstart the bike and forgetting to shift out of neutral. Not my finest moment.

Ouch!  Stuff happens, doesn't it?  I was happy to be able to pick it up myself.

Or leaning it back over to rest on the side stand after starting it - but then realising you already raised the stand and consequently coming damned close to falling right down to the ground with the bike trying to break its fall...
