Oil in the stator?

I recently had some charging issues and replaced my stator, rectifier, regulator, and wiring harness.  I pulled the left cover off to install the newly rebuilt stator and noticed there was oil in the cover?  Is the crank seal shot or is there suppose to be oil coating the stator?  The manual says nothing about it.

Yes there is supposed to be oil there, at least on the 750

Thanks kghost!  Is there a reason why?  Most of the bikes I've worked on had dry stators.  Is there a vent where it comes from in the case.  Just trying to learn more.

O doubt it is for performance but more likely to povide a light coat to protect the stator from corrosion.

I assumed it was for cooling an lubrication of the starter bearing, gear, and clutch.

Keep in mind that some bikes have brushes in the charging system and those will definatly be dry type.

That could a be possible. Only a small amount of oil would be required since you would not want to contaminate the whole system.

Just a guess, really.  But, maybe the 750's dry sump oil system meant positive oil control in the alternator section wasn't of major concern.
Is there a drainback hole in that compartment?  Guess I'll find out soon.  My 750 project has a crack in that cover that leaks oil.

The oil for the LH main bearing goes through this bearing into the alternator side where it lubricates the starter clutch rollers and bearing. The oil should end up in the bottom of the alternator side cover then run down through a hole in the crankcase back to the sump pan where it is returned to the oil tank. There should not be very much oil in the alternator cover at all
