Topic: Saddle bags for a 400f ?

I'm thinking of doing a few overnighters on my 400f but I don't have any bags for the little guy? Do y'all have any suggestions for something I could stuff a pair of skivvies, socks, levis, and a shirt in? I'll need to put some basic tools in with it all.

I'm no noob to living on the road on a bike so the simpler the better...

Ammo cans make good cheap, water tight bags.  They look cool too.

I found small leather bags off eBay. Lots of choices but smaller sizes, not many. Cardboard and duck taped a drink carrier in one.  Tie down nets, cords, etc. Not much room. But small size matches the cb350f.

Not a very good pic, but these are on my 550.

They came with mounting hardware that had "cb400" stamped on it, so I assume they were for a 400.

They are hard plastic or fiberglass and are about 19" long, 7.5" wide and 14" tall.

If you just need something for occasional use, a fabric tailbag on the passenger portion of the seat works well.

No picture, but I've got a set of Nelson Rigg Sport 40 bags on my 78 CB. They look alright. The shape of the bag fits the lines of the upswept exhaust, and the straps that join the two bags are hidden beneath the seat (easily removed too), and they're not stupid big looking. I don't know about the F Model though, guess it depends on your exhaust pipe rise angle. They have a number of styles/sizes.

Back in the olden days when I did a lot of backpacking, I outfitted my yellow lab with Mountainsmith saddlebags...they fit my K8 perfectly

I was considering installing a special rack/mount and hard-bags on a1975' CB400F I had and spoke w/ Kevin TTR400 about it and he told me that the later model CB400F(Honda changed the frame mounts where the passenger footpegs mount directly to the frame similar to a CB550.. the 75' model has the footpegs mounted right onto the rear swingarm) is a better candidate to have to do the hard bags mounted solidly to the frame.
Soft bags will work fine.

Thanks that's good info for everyone. I really just need to pull the trigger on sumpin and see how it works out. I think I might just put a bid out on those throw overs in the previous post.

What model/year is your CB400F strynboen ? Those are Krauser 'Starlet' bags ?

That looks like a 1975' CB400F and I noticed the long forward facing luggage bracket on the bottom of the saddlebag mount.I plan on installing a pr. of Krauser 'Starlet' bags soon to my bike and I like your solution w/ that long,forward bracket.Did you clamp the front of that bracket to the frame tube? Did you make that lower mount/rack custom ?

yes there are 2 mounts to the frame..just a metal band bend ataund the frane tube..you can see one in fr4ont of the chain fender..the 400 is a erly one  ..rear food reste is on the sving arm..not on the frame(think it are a 1975)
have moved the rear indikat lights ..to the rear light holder..so i can take the holder komplet off the bike...normaly the blinkers is on the holder for hardbags
all hardvare is galvanised..so think it stock..germany made..real heigh kvality..and have a nice look..and is nice small..there is a bigger set from krauser too
