OK,thank you. I think the 550 will have a shorter front bracket because of the rear passenger footpeg mounts are much further back toward the rear wheel. That Vetter Windjammer fairing and lowers will offer you Lot's of protection even though it is So heavy.

I think a 2 lane road trip is in order !!!

Where are you headed?

Dunno? I haven't really put a lot of miles on it since my little rebuild. Mebbe 500 or so? So I was just kicking around the thought of an overnighter to somewhere like Astoria Oregon down PCH 101. All I have now is my 04' BMW GSA so my around town bike is the 400. And it excels at the around the city thing..

I'm thinking this way down 101/PCH

That should be a nice trip. Are you going to wait for summer to get here first?  ::) I'd like to do a day trip around Hood's Canal some weekend coming up but my weekends are getting booked up by the boss! Hopefully September/October are nice and warm.

For the trip to Barber I got a set of soft saddle bags on CL for under $50, you just toss them over and secure with a bungee, works well enough but they will leak in heavy rain.

I was all set for camping like this.

Not sure how I missed this thread. I've been looking at these. I like the look of these but I'm not sure about mounting them. I'd rather not have a lot of brackets there when I'm not using the cases.

I'm also looking at this soft bag from Wolfman. When the time comes I may actually go to their HQ's up in Denver and see if I can fill up this bag with blankets or sleeping bags and throw it on the bike and see how it looks. The extra cost of this could outweigh the issue with the mounting brackets for hard cases.

Those are very similar to the Bates bag I had on my Goldwing. Hard bags are very handy

I really liked it, but it is very heavy and ponderous at low speeds, at least with all the stuff on it. As a daily rider and for at least medium range trips my 550 works much better.

All that said, the GL (mine was a first gen GL1000) is much more powerful than you might think, much faster than any stock 750, even with the stuff on it, and the engine is super smooth. At any speed the mirrors are crystal clear and no issues with numb hands or feet over long rides. It's fairly economical too, I got gas mileage similar to what I get on the 550.

Danny,
Can you motor-down slow in 5th gear on that GL1000 and still be able to increase speed while in 5th? The engine probably likes to spin-up more.. I 'heard' that they are peaky compared to the GL1200 but never rode a GL1000.

I found it to be very tractable. By '77 Honda was already starting to retune the motor for lower end torque. The first year was the real hotrod engine.
